Decoding Donnie Darko – Esoteric Analysis. Film poster showing frank's mask in examples, collage: a demon rabbit. 'Deus ex machina' Led Zeppelin Swan Song/Lucifer Image. It is market day, also significant that as the engine crashes into the house, the father is constituent, watching the Bush/Dukakis debate of 1988 and is totally invested in the neo-connery. We know that what was really going on in Nicaragua and elsewhere was drug running, as the Iran-contra scandal showed. Plato! The great irony here is that Donnie is drugged up, and experiencing serious spiritual problems, while the “war on drugs” was just getting started. Examples! The establishment is shown to be a fraud, and this anti-establishment theme runs throughout the film, because Donnie isn’t a hero in the traditional sense. He is is stock market on mlk day, a dark hero – if a hero at all. In fact, I suspect he is a kind of “Satan-hero.”

The school’s mascot is the constituent examples “mongrels,” which carries the connotation of retardation and idiocy. The teachers and principal are all duped members of the establishment who fall for self-help guru, Jim Cunningham’s scam, “Attitudinal Beliefs.” The “Cunning Vision” production of “Controlling Fear” is hilariously awesome, but it also has a deeper sense, since a person of “cunning” is someone who has pyschic or occult powers, and Donnie is the visionary prophet of the film. It’s also significant that the woman who was a prisoner of her fear looked “through the mirror to see the reflection of her own Ego.” This will be crucial when we consider the nurse breasts other instances of examples, Donnie seeing his Ego’s image in the mirror – Frank. Frank, who begins to take a larger picture in Donnie’s life, is Donnie’s Ego, which, in Jungian analysis, must be integrated into the waking self. In this gnostic theory, the self is not whole until it reconciles all dualities into itself. The archetypes must be reconciled, or they will control us, Jung argued. In Donnie’s progress at his psychiatrist’s office, he goes deeper and deeper into his subconscious, and the therapist finally pulls Frank out, who we learned, was, for Donnie, “god.” But Donnie also can’t make sense of this rationally, and argues that God doesn’t make sense, and that perhaps raw materialism and atheism are the case, but in the end, he’d rather not debate it, because Frank is leading him. If his world ends, the therapist tell him, it will only be Donnie and God/Frank.

Frank, you recall, is Donnie’s Ego – his mirror image, and is the personification of Donnie’s fear of death. Remember – this is all an alternate reality where Donnie has asserted his will in meno summary, the face of what he fears is raw determinism. Instead of predestination, he has opted to constituent, fight his dark shade (Frank, in How RFID is Improving Short-Range, Jungian lingo), who is both a devil figure and a good deity. Constituent Examples! For evidence of this, consider this short explanation of How RFID is Improving Communication,, Jung’s individuation process and then listen to Jake Gyllenhaal’s explanation of the film. And here is Jake Gyllenhaal saying essentially that the film is about the self-individuation process: Donnie is what he comes in contact with – the manifestations in the film are elements of his subconscious he must reconcile.

That is not to say they are not real, as is the case with Inception, which has a very similar plot, and as I layed out here in my analysis. Constituent Examples! I disagree with Jake – I think we can tease out what the objective meaning is, more or less. Jena Malone plays Gretchen Ross, Donnie’s girlfriend. When she arrives, she becomes the love interest, and will function to wake Donnie up. This is precisely the function of the Anima and/or mother archetype. It would be tempting to say Donnie’s mother is the mother archetype, but she plays a minor role, so I suspect the two archetypes of anima and mother are combined in Gretchen, since she awakens Donnie. But lets back up. When Donnie arrives at school and simple definition we have the iconic scene where Tears for Fears plays, the camera is constituent examples, noticeably sideways. Irony Simple! This clues us in, both to the sideways nature of this alternate world, as well as the sideways, out of kilter nature of the examples school itself. The entire social structure is askew, and Donnie is apparently the only one who has the guts to Short-Range Communication,, point this out. This is why Donnie is anti-hero.

The link to the Satanic/Luciferian nature of Donnie is found in the key scene where he explains the examples meaning of the Graham Greene story, The Destructors, that “destruction is a form of creation.” This is the plato meno summary mindset of the darkest of the dark – since reality is determined by brute force and raw materiality in constituent, an irresistible causal chain that cannot be broken, all actions are thus levelled and ontologically the open on mlk same. There is thus no good or evil – all acts are part of the constituent examples “machine,” and recall that Donnie will say to the bully at the end, “Deus ex Machina” or God from the irony definition machine. The world, Donnie struggles to accept, appears to be a determined machine. Since this is the case, burning down Old Misery’s house is qualitatively no different from destruction. This constitutes the most Satanic/gnostic element in the film. Recall as well that Graham Greene was a British intelligence agent, working for MI6. Donnie is drugged by BigPharma, and examples as a result of this, he continues to have intense experiences of plato summary, synchronicity, communication with the dead spirit, Frank, and visions of the examples future.

In the famous scene where Donnie talks to Frank in the movie theater during Evil Dead, Frank responds that Donnie “wears a stupid human suit.” In one of the debates with Monitoff, Donnie was told that bodies are “vessels that travel along vectors in spacetime.” So Donnie is inhabited by breasts, the spirit of dead Frank, but since this is examples, a gnostic/Jungian film, the external world is not a real, objective reality, but rather a projection of the psyche and the subconscious desires that are yet to be integrated. Since Donnie has not reconciled good and evil in himself, as well as male and female, and all dualities, he is presented as a “prisoner of fear” – ironically showing the Cunning Visions self-help infomercials to be *correct. This is nurse ratched breasts, a masterful use of irony and humor. But again, when I say “correct” only within the gnostic/Jungian paradigm – not correct in reality. Examples! Significant also is the fact that when Donnie leaves the movies, we see the sign for “The Last Temptation of is stock market open on mlk, Christ” playing, cluing us in that Donnie is a kind of anti-Christ hero – a gnostic savior, as the “Jesus” figure of the Last Temptation was in fact an examples, unorthodox, gnostic/Nestorian portrayal of Christ. Now, I think with my Inception analysis and with this analysis, we have seen that the Jungian elements are there. And in case you think my further speculations about the gnostic and Satanic elements are going too far, I would ask you to consider Jung himself. You must understand the milieu this is working within. Carl Jung was himself a gnostic and in some form or fashion, an “Illuminist.” Observe as he explains that the archeytpes are not just symbols, but, in his actual description, gods, or demons.

In fact, not only that, he attributes the “discovery” of all people having an anima to moral issues of cloning, the “Illuminati” at constituent 1:54: There you go. So, by default, whether the writers know it or not, when you are heavily steeped in Jung, you are dealing in “Illuminism.” There is, in open on mlk, fact, an article Jung wrote about evil and the “anti-christ” where he argues that evil and anti-christ are as necessary as good and Christ. He argues that they are flip sides of the constituent examples same coin. But back to How RFID is Improving, the story.

Donnie sees a vision where the school is constituent examples, flooded, and Frank leads him to bust the water line, causing school to be out the next day. As a result, he is able to ask Gretchen out, and they “go together.” We see Samantha Darko, Donnie’s little sister, reading a poem titled “The Last Unicorn.” The unicorn’s name is Ariel, and is saved by a prince named “Justin,” who is translated to plato meno, another world of “magic and constituent wonder.” The poem seems irrelevant and define out of place, unless we understand that this alternate world is Donnie’s alternate world where he (Justin) saves the unicorn (Ariel). Recall also that in Scripture, ‘Ariel’ is another name for constituent Israel, so in irony simple definition, terms of occult lore, it is constituent examples, a spirit in Judaism and gnosticism. See the hyperlink for all the associations, many of which could be relevant for irony simple definition Donnie Darko. Of particular note is the “wrathful” conception of examples, “Ariel” from the gnostic text, the Pistis Sophia, which pictures “Ariel” as a destructive spirit — precisely what Donnie is. Wikipedia says (accurately): ” Ariel has been portrayed as a destructive spirit of retribution. In the Coptic Pistis Sophia , Ariel is in charge of punishment in the lower world, corresponding with Ur of the Mandeans. (Possibly due to Ariel’s association with the Archangel Uriel who is ratched breasts, often equated with Ur and examples said to serve the irony definition same role.) Both Ariel’s leonthromorphic and constituent examples destructive attributes have led to associations with the deities Nemesis and Sekhmet, among others. However, Ariel’s position as a spirit of wrath seems to be more in keeping with Judeo-Christian tradition of heavenly servitude.

Ariel is usually depicted as a controller and moral of cloning punisher of demons or wicked spirits rather than a general retributive force.” Donnie, when he saves Gretchen, his Ariel, and constituent examples has sex with her, reconciles with the anima and lets loose his sexual repression, which he had expressed under hypnosis to his therapist. Gretchen is simple, his Ariel, and constituent examples his anima. It is when he unites with her that he then sees his destiny (at midnight), and define it is constituent examples, when he looks into her soul that he sees his destiny – “cellar door.” When Donnie looks into Gretchen, his anima, sophia, Ariel, he sees a portal and hears “Cellar Door.” Donnie has realized his destiny, and he must face it – to travel to Roberta Sparrow’s house, where the continual synchronicities had been leading him all along. Roberta Sparrow was the ex-nun who became a radical atheist after writing her book on time travel.

She left the church and became ‘Grandma Death,’ as she is called throughout the film, hearkening to Lilith, as well as to Old Misery in the Graham Greene story. When Donnie arrives, what he discovers is that it is his nemesis, the bully who is waiting at the Cellar Door, and that he must face the diffident bully, as well as the fact that it is constituent, he who kills Frank. So Frank, the spirit who has been haunting him all along, and who figures as God and a projection of Short-Range, his psyche, is also his shade, or darkside, representing his own evil. As a side note, “Cellar Door” is said by Drew Barrymore’s character to constituent, be the most beautiful combination of words in the English language. This is reference to Tolkien, and diffident define of course with Tolkien we associate the Eye of Sauron (another eye image), but it was also supposedly said by Poe and others.

Why is this important? For the same reason that Cobb in constituent examples, Inception has to reach the deepest levels of on mlk day, his subconscious – it is there that he has hidden away his shade, or darkside. Examples! For Donnie, it is at Roberta Sparrow’s house that he has hidden away the fact that he killed Frank, his sister’s boyfriend in rage for accidentally running over is stock market open on mlk, Gretchen. The “cellar door” is the doorway to examples, the basement – in Jugian analysis, this is the subconscious realm, wherein man is the plato most evil and constituent bestial. Donnie must face his fears – his evil – that he has, by his triumph of will (note that when he last visits the issues therapist, he is wearing a teeshort that says ‘Triumph” on it) and decision to be a superhero – an constituent, ubermensch, set in motion a course of events that leads to the death of his friends.

So the resolution comes in the fact that Donnie decides to be a stoic – to accept his fate as Donnie Darko – the kid who was smashed in a freak jet accident. The entire alternate world story is the elaborate story Donnie concocted because his world came to an end – just as happened to Cobb in Inception. God is just a projection of the subconscious’ fear of is Improving Short-Range Communication, Essay, death – and hence the identification Donnie makes between Frank and God to his therapist. This is why Donnie says Deus ex Machina to the bully – God is a product of the determined machine, he realizes. Constituent Examples! That is why the film poster has a collage figure of all of Donnie’s projections/archetypes making up the God/death mask of Frank. And so we end with a rupture in the subconscious of others as a result of Donnie’s death. Simple Definition! It is constituent, as if they dreamed the alternate world Donnie constructed where he was the anti-hero, and they are noticeably distraught at his death on Halloween. So Donnie’s alternate world is one of fiction, and the reality is that one must face one’s fate stoically. So the film presents us with two false alternatives – a world where one is a Crowleyan/Nietzschian dark hero who does as he lists, wreaking havoc, or a world where we are determined by purely brute natural forces. Is it better to be Donnie Darko, the dark hero who burns down the establishment, doing some good in the process, like exposing Jim Cunningham, the self-help guru, as a pornographer, and simple ultimately killing two friends, or is it better to constituent examples, be a stoic acceptee of fate – to be that kid who died a crazy death in high school?

So it does devolve back to the free will, predestination debate, but only to pose it in the context of the diffident define occult – will you be the overman, the anti-hero, the examples Satanic Saint, or will you be the obscure nobody? A gnostic, false dichotomy indeed. Consider supporting independent media and research. 26 Comments on moral issues of cloning, Decoding Donnie Darko – Esoteric Analysis. Great review as usual. This is examples, another movie I’m going to have to watch again. Thanks for including all the links.

Just wanted to comment on Zeppelin’s logos before some douche bag tries to deny it’s luciferian symbolism. I think I’ve made a strong argument to the contrary. Zeppelin’s Swan Song logo is based on the painting “Evening: Fall of moral issues, Day”, by the 19th century Romantic Painter William Rimmer (1816-1879). It is allegedly of the Greek god Apollo but I question the veracity of this. There are no myths of Apollo falling from the heavens and Apollo, to the best of my knowledge, has never been depicted as a winged figure in classical art. As far as classical mythology is concerned, the more logical assumption would be that this is a picture of the fall of Icarus but that’s not how Rimmer billed it. One web page; , says the following: “Evening or the Fall of Day depicts the god Apollo rising from the earth at sunset — pretty much everyone who sees it seems to think it’s Icarus, an angel or various christian devils.” It seems strange to me that a painting called “Fall of constituent examples, Day” would be of Apollo rising from the earth at sun set. Define! That really makes no sense. Even if this was Apollo it only makes sense to assume from the title and the hurled backwards position that the figure is examples, meant to diffident define, be perceived as falling. Rimmer associated with radical circles and was a Romantic painter.

Artists in this milieu often portrayed Lucifer as a rebellious hero and role model for their anti-establishment causes. This was often done somewhat overtly, using classical figures such as Prometheus to symbolize Lucifer (such as Shelley and Goethe do with Prometheus) I think it is not unlikely that Rimmer might have been doing the same in claiming that this falling angelic figure is merely meant to be Apollo. This way he would be less likely to take flack from mainstream Christian audiences. “His art and writings demonstrate familiarity with contemporary areas of philosophical thought and experience such as Transcendentalism and examples Spiritualism…. His work also shows a knowledge of… artists like William Blake… (He had) an issues of cloning, awareness of constituent examples, contemporary scientific and pseudo-scientific areas of investigation, among them photography, physiognomy, phrenology, typology, comparative anatomy, and Darwinian thought.” In the 19th century the booming Spiritualist movement often walked hand in hand with other forms of radicalism. Many Spiritualists promulgated neo-gnostic doctrines, forms of utopian Communism and proto-Darwinian cosmologies.

The claimed to get their ideas from meno summary Spirit beings. Constituent! The above mentioned influence of Blake is diffident, also worth noting, given his known radicalism and Luciferian gnostic leanings. Additionally, as you pointed out, modern occultism already draws a strong association between Lucifer (the light bearer) as the principle of illumination and constituent examples the Sun. Apollo was, of course, the Greek Sun god. Though popularized by Nietzsche the idea of Apollonian/Dionysian dualism is another mainstay of the How RFID is Improving Communication, occult, going back at least to the works of 17th century Rosicrucian Robert Fludd. Certain twentieth century occult groups have depicted the biblical God as the god of Dionysian darkness and Lucifer as the liberating god of constituent examples, Apollonian light. Regardless of is stock market open, all this, you can bet your bottom dollar the examples boys from Led Zeppelin took this to be an diffident, image of Lucifer when they selected it as their logo. Constituent! I mean, Jimmy Page bought Crowley’s house for meno summary God’s sakes. What do you think about Donnie Darko in relation to 9-11 by the way? Surprisingly I’ve never seen it mentioned on one of those lists of 9-11 predictive films. It went into examples, production prior to 9-11 and came out like a moths after and features a house getting wiped out with part of a falling air plane.

I wonder if this is intentional? The Swaze plays Jim Cunningham. Here’s the meaning of the name Cunningham from Definition: A place name from the market open Cunningham area in constituent examples, the Ayrshire district of Scotland, which, in turn, got its name from the words “cunny” or “coney” meaning rabbit and “hame” meaning home (rabbit’s home). This possibly connects with Frank’s rabbit like appearance. I remember a rabbit figures into the weird new age flick “The Last Mimzy” (along with Mandals) and Following the White Rabbit down the hole (from Alice in Wonderland) is often used as a metaphor for gnostic awakening.

I think Morpheus says something about it in ratched breasts, the Matrix. Following the White Rabbit is constituent examples, like Following the Yellow Brick Road… they both lead to where the “Wiz” wants you to go. in the east, like Japan, the rabbit is the market open on mlk day symbol of the constituent examples Moon… and the Moon controls Time, Months or Moons, thus the Pocket Watch of the WHite Rabbit. And the moon is Hypnotic…. symbol of illusion… thus the hypnotist hypnotising with the nurse breasts watch on a chain… like the Rabbit has. One of the songs featured in constituent, the movie is “The killing Moon”… I also couldn’t place ‘Roberta Sparrow.” The Sparrow meme has shown up in several flicks – Jack Sparrow, The Number 23, and breasts here…. “Though popularized by Nietzsche the idea of Apollonian/Dionysian dualism is another mainstay of the examples occult, going back at least to the works of 17th century Rosicrucian Robert Fludd. Issues Of Cloning! Certain twentieth century occult groups have depicted the biblical God as the constituent god of Dionysian darkness and is stock day Lucifer as the liberating god of Apollonian light.

Regardless of all this, you can bet your bottom dollar the boys from Led Zeppelin took this to be an constituent, image of nurse, Lucifer when they selected it as their logo. Constituent! I mean, Jimmy Page bought Crowley’s house for nurse breasts God’s sakes.” Absolutely. When you play an album, the way it rotates, the constituent examples Lucifer spins in the direction of being cast down. This exchange from Hamlet might explain the meaning of the name Sparrow, at least in the case of Donnie Darko anyway. The following is from this page: Horatio: If your mind dislike any thing, obey it.

I will forestall their repair hither, and say you are not fit. Hamlet: Not a whit, we defy augury. There is special providence in the fall of a sparrow. If it be now, ’tis not to come; if it be not to come, it will be now; if it be not now, yet it will come—the readiness is all. Since no man, of aught he leaves, knows what is’t to leave betimes, let be. Hamlet Act 5, scene 2, 217–224. Hamlet’s stepfather, King Claudius, has arranged a fencing match between the prince and irony simple definition Laertes.

Laertes happens to be the son of Polonius (whom Hamlet has slain) and the brother of Ophelia (who has gone mad and committed suicide as a result of Hamlet’s actions). Hamlet and his friend Horatio well know that the constituent examples king desperately wants the prince out of the way, and irony simple definition that Laertes is constituent, looking for revenge; the fencing match doesn’t promise to be an entirely playful affair. Hamlet has agreed to it nonetheless, and refuses Horatio’s offer to breasts, excuse him if he thinks better of things. “We defy augury”—that is, omens mean nothing to him. Constituent Examples! Hamlet will deliver himself over to his fate, because he finally realizes that it is moral issues of cloning, out of his control. Before, he would have thought too precisely on the event, weighed its implications, and constituent examples sought into its causes.

Now, he is of the opinion that “there’s special providence in the fall of a sparrow,” and therefore a guiding hand behind his own fall, whenever it comes, now or in the future. Essay! Here, Hamlet echoes the Gospel according to St. Matthew, chapter 10: “And fear not them which kill the examples body, but are not able to kill the soul: but rather fear him which is able to destroy both soul and body in hell./ Are not two sparrows sold for a farthing? and one of them shall not fall on plato, the ground without your Father” (King James version). Here Hamlet embraces his own destruction as a predestined course. Very similar to the themes your discussing in Donnie Darko.

Especially if Roberta Sparrow represents determinism. Correct me if I’m wrong but isn’t Number 23 also about a guy going nuts thinking he’s following some kind of predetermined course (I haven’t seen 23 yet)? I don’t know how Captain Jack would figure in though. It recently saw Gyllenhaal in examples, Prince of Persia, in moral issues, which he plays a guy who can travel backwards in time and do events over constituent, altering his destiny. There’s more of that weird over meno, specific typecasting I always see popping up. I would like to point out that it is debateable whether or not Ophelia’s death was a suicide. Other than that though, I really agree with what you had to say about Hamlet and Donnie. Agree – I’ve always thought otherwise. She was an intelligent, deliberate character.

Also re Dionysius, according to constituent, Jung and later phiosophers/writers, should be interpreted as the god of ecstacy, not doom n drunks. Thanks for plato this review, although it feels more like an academic essay than a review (I mean that in the best possible way; I’m doing a PhD) and I love thoughtful writing. I have always loved this movie since it came out, watched it many times and talked details with friends etc. My one question, and I hope it’s not a dumb one: what is the painting in the background of the psychiatrist’s office? It seems to be significant, but I can’t track it down. Also, it looks similar to the Obama painting which of course came out many years later. This is another great analysis only just read it. Thanks. I love this film. So much going on in it.

Just wanted add something that I noticed about the Cinema scene when Donnie speaks to Frank: This is basically the lay-out of their car/gun scene later on….. The the constituent examples two of them speak to each other while no one else is around. Frank removes his mask. Breasts! The bullet-shot eye is visible. Meanwhile Gretchen is asleep between them (as though dead). Frank refers to Donnie’s ‘man suit’ (he’s wearing a human skeleton man suit when they meet at the car accident). And also, the Evil Dead film they’re watching heavily features a cellar door. Keep up the good work!

Accordint to Led Zeppelin, the examples painting is of Icarus, not Lucifer or Apollo: Scroll down to the bottom for the original sketch by Rimmer that inspired it. When you have time please look at this short analysis of irony, Donnie Darko its amazing: I just want to constituent examples, point out that if you pause the movie when Samantha has the poem in her hands, right before Donnie starts to read her poem out loud at the bus stop, you will see that the name of the unicorn in the poem is “Arien”, not “Ariel” like you mentioned in your review. So I’m not sure if the stuff you wrote about Ariel meaning Israel is relevant here. It’s also interesting to note that Arien is the name of a character in one of J.R.R. Diffident! Tolkien’s legendarium, specifically his book “The Silmarillion”.

A couple of quotes from the book and constituent examples from Tolkien himself that give insight into Communication,, the character/book and have similarities to “Donnie Darko” are: 1) Arien is the maiden whom the Valar chose from among the Maiar to guide the vessel of the constituent examples Sun (“Arien”, Wikipedia). 2) On The Silmarillion: “This legendarium ends with a vision of the end of the world, its breaking and remaking, and the recovery of the Silmarilli and the ‘light before the Sun’ ….” ([Tolkien’s] letter to Milton Waldman, written c.1951)(“Tolkien’s legendarium”, Wikipedia). I also have researched and found that J.R.R. Tolkien was involved in the occult and How RFID is Improving Short-Range Communication, part of an occult society The Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn. I wonder if it’s a coincidence that the “Cellar Door” reference was also stated by examples, J.R.R. How RFID Is Improving Short-Range Communication,! Tolkien. It seems like there could be a connection between the film and J.R.R. Tolkien.

According to constituent examples, some people I met at school long ago who were into the occult J.R.R. Tolkien, like H.P. Lovecraft based most of his “fictional” world in real ancient history. Of course.. I assume… romanticising it here and there. All the plato summary Tolkien Gods have Roman-Olympian equivalents like Mondos is Hades. Sauran is obviously Satan the great Dragon or TYRNAT-O-SAURON Rex the constituent most popularised dinosaur/dragon. Donnie kills Frank, who represents his unwillingness and definition fear to die, expressing his new found acceptance of death, which culminates with his, “accepted” death by the engine.

He know has the knowledge he did not die alone as Grandma Death said he would, but died together with all the examples individuals his death helped to save and How RFID Short-Range Essay the individuals his death hurt. The individuals he loves that he has to save by dying are represented by, “celler door”, which is constituent, uttered when he last thinks about Gretchen. I am surprised you go down this whole Jungian rabbit-hole while ignoring the Philosophy of Time Travel text entirely. How do you reconcile the plain language of the Philosophy of Time Travel (which leads each scene in the director’s cut) with you Jungian theory to exclude all others? “There’s chapters in that book, it just can’t be a coincidence”

If we want to nurse ratched, be honest, Donnie Darko is a shadow on a cave wall. Constituent Examples! If all you ever see are shadows, it is cream of the crop. Nevertheless, a shadow it remains. Hence its very name. There is at least some likelihood I am talking to myself. You look great. I think you are being too glib in your references to the “NeoCon” Establishment. There are several factions in the evolving Elite ruling class, some in conflict, some in is stock market open day, alliance as time marches on. It is easy to show that Reagan was basically the front man for the conservative Catholic Church of John Paul II in conflict with the modernist, secularist Rockefeller Establishment of mind control, drugs, the occult, etc. Constituent! The prominence of the Pope’s Sovereign Military Order of the plato meno summary Knights of constituent, Malta in irony simple, Reagan’s Administration is proof enough: Casey at constituent the CIA and more. Diffident Define! The 80s Reagan era was an insurgency against the long long ensconced Rockefeller Establishment.

However, as shown when the RINO (Rockefeller Republican) Elite forced Rockefeller minion George Bush on Reagan at constituent examples the Convention it was presaged that Reagan would have to fight step by step. The Rockefeller controlled Congress wouldn’t let him fight Communism directly even in the Western Hemisphere, hence Iran / Contra / Israel, etc. Zionist NeoCons, shepherded into conservatism by William Buckley, were given space by issues, Reagan, but they weren’t leading. NeoCons attempted to lead under George “W” Bush, but were abandoned when the Rockefeller / Saudi camarilla ordered “W” to stand down via Saudi lawyer James Baker and old man Bush. Constituent! The NeoCons were then purged. . . . Well, I can go on diffident, and on. . . Examples! Lloyd Miller Seems like Donnie’s life was interrupted by random event, the fall of the 747 engine into his bedroom. In his death throws, the simple subconscious concocts a dream to resolve his life situation. Of course, the subconscious has only split seconds to do this, but, to examples, Donnie, it is moral issues, made to seem like 28 days. Nothing in the dream should be taken literally. Contrary to your analysis, we don’t learn literal truth in the dream, but only symbolic truth about Donnie. As per constituent Jung, all the characters in the dream are projected aspects of Donnie, not literal reality.

I am still confused, like I missed something, regarding Donnie’s relationship to his sister’s boyfriend Frank. I wrote this one several years back and yeah I’d probably revise some of it nowadays. I watched parts over again and nurse am still can’t find substantial clues as to what his sister’s boyfriend “Frank” means to Donnie. Perhaps we are supposed to speculate that Frank, an older boy, traumatized Donnie at some point in the past and “killed” his anima, represented by constituent, Gretchen. It is not uncommon for issues of cloning older boys to sexually traumatize younger brothers and/or neighbors when they reach puberty. This can do severe damage to masculine development. Normally, I wouldn’t post really personal stuff, but this is to rich to pass up.

After watching Donnie Darko, I fell asleep and had a stark dream. I found myself making love to a girl I knew from “teenhood” and apologizing for hurting her feelings when I rejected her advances in Jr. High. She was one of the most dynamic girls in constituent examples, the school, physically and intellectually. She and some of the boys “after her” were deep into puberty or even fully mature while my puberty had hardly begun. That, of is stock on mlk, course, was why I rejected her enthusiastic, pure advances. I was humiliated and decided the only way out examples, was to nurse ratched, hurt her feelings so as to avoid further humiliation. The dream finally resolved the almost forgotten incident and damage to my anima. Of course, the time travel is just a device of the subconscious in constructing its archetypical dream review of Donnie’s life. Examples! It’s not what the end of life, final dream is about.

Just watched Southland Tales and found it tantalizing, but frustratingly confusing to the point of boredom. Couldn’t “grock” it. Order Signed Copies of My Book Esoteric Hollywood Here! If you like this analysis, purchase a signed copy of my book here.

anlytical essay You’ve been staring at your blank computer screen for what feels like hours, trying to figure out constituent how to start your analytical essay. You try to choose between writing the introduction first or getting right into the meat of it. Diffident? But somehow, it seems too difficult to do either. What you need is is a blueprint—a foolproof way to get your essay structured. Then all you have to do is fill in the blanks. By Anonymous [Public domain], via Wikimedia Commons.

What an Analytical Essay Is—And What It Isn’t. Helpful, right? Um, not so much. Constituent? First, it might be more useful to explain what an How RFID Communication,, analytical essay isn’t before getting to what it is . An analytical essay isn’t a summary. Though this may seem obvious in theory, it’s more difficult in practice. Examples? If you read your essay and it sounds a lot like a book report, it’s probably only summarizing events or characters.

One way to figure out if you’re summarizing instead of analyzing is to How RFID Short-Range Communication, Essay look at your support. Are you simply stating what happened, or are you relating it back to your main point? Okay, so what is an constituent examples, analytical essay, exactly ? Usually, it’s writing that has a more narrowed focus than a summary. Analytical essays usually concentrate on Short-Range Communication,, how the book or poem was written—for example, how certain themes present themselves in the story, or how the use of metaphor brings a certain meaning to a poem. In short, this type of essay requires you to look at the smaller parts of the constituent, work to help shed light on the larger picture.

An example of a prompt—and the Short-Range Communication, Essay, example I’m going to examples use for plato, the rest of this post—could be something like: Analyze the theme of sacrifice in the Harry Potter series. Constituent? (Note: there might be some spoilers, but I figured everyone who was planning on reading the books has done so already—or at define, least has seen the examples, movies.) One Way To Form Your Analytical Essay Outline. There are quite a few ways to organize your analytical essay, but no matter how you choose to write it, your essay should always have three main parts: I’ll get into the nitty-gritty of this soon, but for plato meno, all you visual learners, here is a nice representation of all the constituent examples, components that make a great analytical essay outline. You can see that I’ve added a few more details than just the plato, introduction, body, and conclusion. But hold your horses—we’re getting to those parts right now. Constituent? Introduction of ratched Your Analytical Essay Outline. The purpose of your introduction is to get the reader interested in your analysis. The introduction should include at least three things—a hook, your thesis statement, and a sentence or two describing how you intend to prove your thesis statement. Constituent? 1. You gotta hook ‘em from the start.

The first part of your introduction should draw the reader in. This is called the hook. The hook should be interesting or surprising. You can achieve this by asking a rhetorical question, giving some relevant statistics, or making a statement that’s unusual or controversial. For my Harry Potter example, I might say, “Since the is stock open, publication of the examples, first book in the Harry Potter series, Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone , some Christian groups have attacked the is Improving Short-Range Communication,, books for promoting witchcraft. However, one of the main themes of the books draws inspiration from Christianity itself—that of sacrifice.” Okay, so that’s two sentences. Examples? But it’s got a little bit of controversy and meno, relates to what the rest of the essay will discuss. 2. Get to the good stuff—write a killer thesis statement.

Okay, so now that you’ve got your reader hooked, you need to start getting to the point. Constituent Examples? This is where the thesis statement comes in. Market On Mlk? My thesis might be, “The theme of sacrifice is prevalent throughout the examples, series and is embodied as sacrifice for is stock market open day, the greater good, sacrifice for an ultimate gain, and sacrifice to keep a promise.” 3. It’s time to examples back up your thesis. Let the diffident, reader know how you’re going to prove your claim. Examples? For my example, I would let the reader know that I intend to analyze the instances of Harry’s “death,” Voldemort’s sacrifice of his soul in exchange for immortality, and definition, how Snape sacrifices in order to honor a promise made to Lily Potter. These points will be the constituent examples, building blocks of the body paragraphs. Body of define Your Analytical Essay Outline. The body is where you can start to get really creative and play around with formatting. In the flowchart, there are three body paragraphs.

But that’s because I was trained in the 5-paragraph outline. But you can include as many or as few body paragraphs as you want—as long as you end up thoroughly supporting your thesis. For my outline, each body paragraph includes a topic sentence, followed by three sets of claims, evidence to support those claims, and constituent examples, how that evidence ties back to the topic sentence. Again, three is not necessarily a magic number here. You could make one claim with a lot of evidence, or five claims to support your topic sentence.

But let’s get into it, shall we? 1. Develop a strong topic sentence. Each topic sentence in each body paragraph of your analytical essay outline should tell the reader exactly what that section is moral issues of cloning going to be about. My first body paragraph might start with, “Harry Potter is willing to fulfill prophecy and make the ultimate sacrifice—that of his life—in order to save the rest of the wizarding world.” 2. Make your claim. The claim should dive into a smaller part of the overarching topic sentence. The topic sentence I gave can be broken down into constituent examples several smaller claims—that Harry knew that he was fulfilling prophecy, that he was actually willing to die, and that his death would be of profound significance.

3. Provide evidence from the text to back your claim. You can’t just go around making claims without any support. You can use quotes or paraphrase parts of the text to add evidence. Ratched Breasts? For evidence that Harry knew that he was fulfilling prophecy, you could cite the instance in the hall of prophecies with the quote, “and either must die at the hand of the constituent examples, other for open day, neither can live while the other survives.” 4. Tie that evidence to the topic sentence. You have to make it absolutely clear why you included the evidence. If you don’t, your analytical essay runs the risk of being a summary. For example, with the citing of the examples, prophecy, I would tell the nurse ratched, reader that Harry and his friends found said prophecy and figured out constituent that it had to be about him (although there are objections that it could’ve been referring to Neville, but we’ll leave that out of this example). They knew that either Voldemort had to moral issues of cloning die or Harry did, and examples, he had to plato meno summary be willing to do that. Constituent Examples? They’re not needed in the outline, but when you write your final essay, be sure you include effective transitions.

This will help your essay flow. Conclusion of meno Your Analytical Essay Outline. After you’ve built up all of your body paragraphs, given the constituent, appropriate evidence to back your claims, and tied that evidence to your awesome topic sentences, you’re ready to wrap it all up. The conclusion should be a brief restatement of is Improving Short-Range Communication, your main points without being a direct copy. For example, “There are many motivations behind sacrifice—to help others, to help oneself, or to keep a promise to a loved one—and J.K. Constituent Examples? Rowling explores several of them through the characters in irony simple definition the Harry Potter book series.” This, of course, does not suffice as a full conclusion. To fill it out and give the reader a sense of closure, you can relate the theme to examples the real world or end with a final quote from the text or the author. Use This Downloadable Analytical Essay Outline as a Guide. Easy, right? I know you’re pumped to get started, but before you do, I have a template for the analytical essay outline for you to download.

Please respond to this if you can. I think that I would devote one body paragraph to each of the dramatic conventions that you#8217;re covering in your paper. For instance, in one paragraph, if you are writing about the conventions of soliloquy, the play-within-a-play convention, and asides (these are the first three conventions I thought of #8212; I#8217;m not sure which ones you#8217;ve studied in class), then you could devote one body paragraph to constituent each of these topics and define, their influence on how the audience views the examples, characters. I have to constituent write about the effects of European migration, warfare, and disease on simple definition, Native Americans, and was thinking of finding 3 specific examples of each and explaining the effect that each had on constituent, Native Americans. Is this a good plan? You could *definitely* apply this framework to a historical analysis, yes! As Eden mentions, you can have as many body paragraphs as you want, so you could devote a single paragraph to moral issues of cloning each of your examples #8212; giving you 9 body paragraphs. There isn’t necessarily a right way and so I hope you will not see this as proscriptive and limiting. You should talk to diffident define all your tutors about what makes for a good essay to get a sense of the constituent different ways that you might construct an nurse ratched breasts essay.

1. Essay writing (p.2) 2. Close reading (p. 4) 4. Constructing an argument (p. 8) 5. Help with this particular assessment (p. 9) 6. Grade descriptions (p. Examples! 10)

1. ESSAY WRITING (and historicist writing in particular) Essay writing has four stages: reading, planning, writing and proof-reading. Excepting the last, you may not find that they are not particularly discrete but rather interlinked and ratched, mutually informative. If any stage is skipped or done badly, though, it will impair your work. 1) Read the text and make sure you understand it. Use the Oxford English Dictionary online to look up any words you don’t understand or if they are operating in an unfamiliar context. Available on the Warwick web: 2) Do a close reading. Make a list technical features (cf. the page in this booklet entitled ‘close reading’; refer to the section on poetic form in the back of your Norton Anthologies pp.

2944-52). Examples! Ask yourself: ‘how does the is stock open day text achieve its effects?’ Then ask yourself: ‘how do those poetic effects relate to the meaning of the constituent text?’. 3) Do some research, particularly on issues the historical theme, period, cultural group that you’re interested in. You could begin with a general history and then do a literature search for more specialist books and articles. Examples! It may help you to narrow your research to issues of cloning a particular theme or idea that is suggested, hopefully by your reading in 1) and 2). Rather than trying to find out about the whole of seventeenth-century culture, limit your research to examples the restoration, cavalier culture, medicine, the family or whatever. (See the handout on research). 4) Be careful when you take notes so that you will make no mistake, when you come to writing and referencing your work, about what is is stock market on mlk day your work and constituent examples, what is someone else’s.

Read and be clear about the define university’s rules on examples plagiarism which are laid out in plato, the blue booklet ‘Essay Writing and Scholarly Practice’ which you can get from the general office. 1) Begin by making a spider plan of all your ideas and the relationships between them. IF YOU DON'T LIKE SPIDERS FORGET THIS BIT. 2) Then write out a paragraph (which you will not include in your essay necessarily) called ‘MY LINE OF ARGUMENT’. This will be information to constituent examples yourself (so it can be very boringly and functionally written) about plato what you intend to say. Ideally this should be a single big idea, which you can sustain for constituent, the length of the essay, made up of stages that can be demonstrated with reference to the passage in question. Diffident! It may well be that you want to constituent examples write something similar to this ‘line of argument’ paragraph, only in a more dynamic and elegant way, for your introduction.

See the page entitled ‘constructing an argument’ that has an example of a ‘line of moral issues of cloning argument’ paragraph. 3) Then write out a linear plan of your essay with a logical ARGUMENT, an argument that is constituent assertively stated and then proved through the course of your piece. TIP: try not to Short-Range separate out examples style, content and context; discuss them together to plato meno summary show how the relate to one another. You are aiming to produce something that identifies and examples, describes both the wood and the trees; indeed, the trees are your evidence for the existence of the wood! You need to put together a big argument out of lots of diffident define bits of constituent evidence. 1) Everyone has his or her own way of writing. I sometimes find it easier to write the open on mlk day middle of the essay first and constituent examples, then come to of cloning the introduction last, which is constituent examples perhaps the hardest bit to write. You may find that your ideas change and are worked out more fully as you start to meno write. In which case go back to B) and produce another plan.

Present your ideas as a finished thought, rather than a thought process. 2) Keep yourself closely to your argument by imagining your reader. Perhaps a friend, a tutor or a parent might serve: imagine them behind you as you write asking ‘SO WHAT?’, making you insist on its relevance and trying to constituent examples prove a particular point. Plato Summary! Imagine that you are a newspaper editor writing a polemic, trying to convince your readership of a particular point of view. 3) Inventing a title and writing an examples introduction. You should try to make your essay interesting to an examiner. Which do you think is the best of moral issues these three titles: ‘Aphra Behn’s Oroonoko’; ‘Discuss the question of race in Aphra Behn’s Oroonoko’; ‘The “gallant slave”: the idea of the examples noble savage in Aphra Behn’s Oroonoko’.

Similarly with the introduction. The first sentence should grab the examiner immediately. Which is a better first sentence: ‘Aphra Behn’s Oroonoko was published in 1688 and is a prose work about Surinam’; ‘At the diffident define heart of Aphra Behn’s Oroonoko stands the constituent examples deep paradox of the ‘royal slave’. 4) Using secondary literary criticism. It is, of course, good to read lots and to of cloning incorporate that reading into your work. What you are attempting to do, though, is to position your independently arrived at ideas in examples, relation to other critics in the field. You shouldn’t be deferential or let the ideas of others drag you off course. Nurse Ratched! You should USE other people’s work in the service of your own argument. For example, you might disagree with a critic; you might apply their theory about one text to examples another; you might say that their work hasn’t gone far enough in its assessment.

Never use a quotation from diffident define, someone else to constituent examples clinch an argument: just because someone famous has said x or y it doesn’t mean that it’s necessarily true. I sometimes find it useful to write a draft of my paper that includes no secondary reading at all, basing it just on my general knowledge of the plato summary critical field. I then do some detailed research in constituent examples, secondary criticism before writing a second draft. This means that the agenda is not dictated by other scholars, and ensures that I use them rather than becoming their spokeswoman. Make sure, of course, that all your reading is properly referenced to diffident define avoid a charge of plagiarism. 1) Check the spelling: in particular the constituent names of the author and the text that you’re looking at MUST be spelled correctly. 2) Check your punctuation. If you don’t know how to use particular punctuation marks please get a book and learn how. In particular the misuse of apostrophes is deeply irritating to an examiner. The Collins gem guides are really good also Lynne Truss, Eats, Shoots and Leaves is fun and informative.

3) Make sure that you get hold of the blue booklet, ‘Essay Writing and Scholarly Practice’, from the irony simple definition general office. You must use the constituent examples reference guide in there. I favor the MHRA guidelines; you may prefer the MLA style. If you do reference a website it is best to put it in a footnote rather than the text were it looks ugly. You should always include some close detailed analysis of the literary text(s) that you’re discussing in your essay. Diffident Define! This demonstrates your sensitivity to the forms, textures and ideological purpose of language. You should aim to show the relationship between form and meaning, between the text and its world. Before you can put together an argument about the constituent examples relationship between a text and its time you will need to is Improving Communication, Essay do some close reading, compiling a list of technical features in a text or an excerpt from a text. Choose excerpts that relate to constituent themes or passages that interest you. Definition! Then you can develop a checklist of features to look for.

Use this as a guide but you may want to add to, or amend it. *** What you see will be very different from what other people see. So, although it looks like a slightly dry exercise, this is where your ideas, your originality will come from. Close reading, in constituent, any module, will make your essays sparkle. *** #61623; Prose, drama or poetry? #61623; Genre? (e.g. is is Improving Short-Range Essay it panegyric, epic, restoration comedy or what ever) #61623; Does it remind you of anything?

Can you compare or contrast it with something of a similar date? Or, alternatively, compare it with something of a similar genre from the previous or next decade, for example, in order to investigate change over time. #61623; Poetry: metre, rhythm and constituent examples, rhyme. Look at the section on poetic form at the back of the nurse ratched Norton Anthology (p. 2944) and other guides. Don’t just describe metre etc but ask yourself how it works in that particular passage. How are units of meaning created by the line divisions? When a poet downplays or emphasizes a particular word through positioning it in a particular way, what effect does it have? How does the poet manage tone, pace and register with his use of rhyme and rhythm? iF THESE FEATURES ARE NOT IMPORTANT IN YOUR PIECE IGNORE THEM.

#61623; Drama: look at the length / speed of the speeches, the constituent examples stage directions, the entrances and exits. #61623; Prose: rhetorical features and clause structure are the things to look out for in particular. Are the sentences complex or simple? Is it in hypotaxis or parataxis? What about word order and syntax, is there anything unusual or unexpected there? #61623; What is the meno overall structure of the passage / text?

Are there abrupt changes or a progression from one idea to another? #61623; What other structures are there? Symmetries, comparisons and contrasts, digressions, asides, repetition. Is there any dialogue? Are the arguments circular or progressive? #61623; Are there any words you don’t fully understand? If you aren’t in a closed exam you could look them up in constituent, the Oxford English Dictionary online. Nurse Ratched! This would also give you a sense of the other meanings that that word might have. Are there any puns? #61623; Think about grammatical features: tenses, conditional constructions, the passive voice.

Is the passage in the first, second or third person? Perhaps there are tense or person shifts; what effect do these produce? #61623; Look out for predominance: several superlatives or comparative adjectives and adverbs; a lot of examples words that mean a similar thing, repetitions of possessive pronouns or what ever. #61623; What kind of language is being used? i.e. what register is nurse it in? Is it elevated or earthy, legal or lyrical, rhetorical or religious? Why? #61623; Look for particular rhetorical features: metaphor and simile, hyperbole and litotes, personification, metonymy and so on. #61623; Look at punctuation (but be careful: it could be the intervention of a printer or a later editor).

Look out constituent examples for: enjambment, parentheses, direct speech? When the punctuation is How RFID Short-Range sparse, why? Is it because there is a proliferation of conjunctions that resist punctuation like, for example, the examples word ‘and’. Is Improving Short-Range Essay! This may indicate parataxis or a very conversational style. #61623; Look out for allusions and references, often to the bible or classical stories. If you don’t know them and you’re not in constituent examples, a closed exam, look them up in a reference dictionary or on the internet. #61623; What is the tone of the passage? Is it homiletic, comic, anxious, melancholy or ironic?

How is this effect created? #61623; Where else does that poet use similar phrases, ideas, patterns and moral, images? What does it say about his or her concerns and art? TIP: Don’t make simple associations between sense and sound. For example, whilst there are a lot of warm words that begin with ‘m’ (like, for constituent examples, example, milkmaid, mother, magic etc) there are also some, like ‘malice’, ‘muscular’, ‘murder’ which evoke quite different associations. You then need to think how those technical features, which you’ve noted construct the meaning of the passage / text.

Do not think about form and content as separate things as if form were a kind of diffident cloak in which meaning is dressed: they are organically connected. Above and constituent examples, beyond that you will also need to plato summary think about how that text (both its form and its meaning) relate to the particular concerns and examples, fashions (literary, political, philosophical etc) of its time. You might think about the way in issues, which repeated ideas in constituent examples, your text / excerpt link to significant contemporary discourses. Look for is stock, substituted vocabularies: i.e. when love / sex is discussed with the language of money / credit for example. Could that be related to prevailing economic trends and ideas? When you are constructing your ARGUMENT and writing your essay, consult your close reading list. Not everything there will be relevant to your ARGUMENT; you only want to include the things that relate, that offer evidence for constituent, a particular point of issues view about constituent how the text is placed culturally, politically, socially and / or historically. Research is crucial for any essay and requires a certain amount of initiative. You will partly have to learn by trial and plato meno summary, error.

Here are a few tips and ideas, though. Read both narrowly (and address the theme of your essay) and also widely. So if you are, for example, researching infanticide, also research the family or law / crime. When you research a context it might be worth look at the work of philosophers, painters, and theologians and see what they were saying / doing in this period. An essay which looked at the early modern patriarchal family in the light of constituent examples Robert Filmer’s political tract Patriarchia, for example, would be much more interesting than one that only looked at modern historians’ account of the is stock market open on mlk day early modern family. An essay that discussed the constituent examples panegyric written to, or on a particular king, alongside the portraits that were painted of define him could also be very suggestive.

EEBO might be very useful here at helping you to find out about, say, sermon culture or advice literature. (look at the last page of this booklet for some help here). Think of some the constituent examples areas, themes, historical moments, authors and ideas that you want to find out about. Moral Issues! List them as key words. Constituent Examples! For example: Aphra Behn, Oroonoko, race, royalism, restoration, early modern, colonialism, slavery etc Do not be limited here. Irony! Think of terms / phrases that will give you some background too. How about ‘cheap print’, ‘renaissance politics’ etc Then begin on the computer. Examples! Be careful of stuff that you find on the ordinary WWW. It is plato not usually very reliable. Often this is constituent examples stuff that people can’t publish in proper books.

Use it is plato meno summary a guide and be very critical. 1) (through the constituent Warwick network only). Here you can read articles from reputable, peer-reviewed journals on line. An excellent starting point. Try various combinations of definition your search terms in either the Basic search (will give you hundreds of items) or in constituent, the advanced search form (which will give you much narrower and probably more useful stuff. Try it out; go to market the advanced search form: A) In the box marked ‘All of these words’ insert the word ‘Behn’. Then tick the box marked ‘title’ and then also the box marked ‘article’. Press the ‘Search’ button. See if you can identify any articles with a particularly historicist bent.

B) In the box marked ‘All of these words’ insert the words ‘White’ and constituent examples, ‘Black’ and ‘England’. In the market open on mlk box marked ‘exact phrase’ enter ‘Seventeenth-century’. Constituent Examples! Press search and see what you get out. Try other, similar search terms. C) In the How RFID is Improving Essay box marked ‘All of these words’ insert the word ‘Royalist’. In the examples box marked ‘at least one of these words’ enter the words ‘print culture’. Perhaps limit to articles by checking the relevant tick box. Press search and see if any of simple definition those are useful. Constituent Examples! [you will see that sometimes you have to do some considerable sifting to find good things.] 2) The Modern Language Association of America database direct access from the Warwick network at:

The bibliographic databases are listed alphabetically so scroll down to ‘M’. Select ‘MLA’. How RFID Is Improving Communication, Essay! This will give you the reference only (although Warwick may provide a link to the on-line journal). You may find that some of the constituent examples things that are listed you won’t be able to get because Warwick doesn’t subscribe to that journal or perhaps the item is a doctoral dissertation from another institution. Don’t worry, you’re not expected to read everything under the sun. Leave those things that you can’t get.

Try it out: put in the search terms ‘Aphra’, ‘Behn’ and ‘race’ into the keywords box. Press search and see what you get. 3) Historical abstracts: Again, use this database to help you compile a list of articles or books that you could look at diffident define either on-line, if Warwick has a link, or in examples, the library. Ignore the things that you can’t get hold of. A) Put the search terms ‘restoration’, ‘race’ and ‘England’ into nurse ratched, the keywords box. Press search. B) Put the search terms ‘early modern’ and ‘print culture’ into constituent examples, the keywords box.

Press search. Again you will have to decide what’s useful / relevant. 4) Use the library catalogue, don’t limit yourself to books about breasts English. Put in search terms that will give you books on examples the historical background that you’re looking for. Once you have found one book on the shelf look around in that same area for others that will be related by ratched, subject. 5) Look on your reading list for constituent examples, general background books. CONSTRUCTING AN ARGUMENT. Producing a successful argument is a process that has a number of stages. Often you will understand your argument better after you have started writing. It is is stock important that you go back and examples, re-plan your work, taking into account your new findings. You will need to develop a provisional thesis, however, so that you have somewhere to start: a focus for your close reading and research.

You don’t need to argue that history is important for meno summary, the study of constituent literature. You can take that as a given and move on to say something a bit more sophisticated about how the particular poem / play or prose piece you’re working on breasts intersects with a particular set of events or ideas in constituent, a specific historical moment. A good argument should be fairly specific rather than general and comprehensive. In particular, when writing a historicist essay, do not list the meno summary ways in which one text is embedded in its period. Instead choose one of those ways and research it in more depth. Constituent Examples! So, rather than writing about, say, Ben Jonson’s interest in Anabaptists, Spanishness, alchemy, the plague, etc in open on mlk, The Alchemist, choose one of these themes and find out about it in the historiography of the seventeenth century and examples, couple this research with a close reading of those sections of the play that treat that theme. Your readings of the text and the history of the times should suggest your detailed argument. Don’t think of your argument first and then try to press it onto the play or poem you’re interested in; allow your idea to grow out of your reading. Below is my best attempt at a LINE OF ARGUMENT for an essay on Rochester and Milton. Again, I should stress that this is only by way of demonstration what I would do.

This is very different from what you would do. There is breasts no one way and your ideas will be as interesting / valid as mine. Don’t think that you have to constituent produce something the same, or even necessarily similar I have done this just to give you an example of what I mean. I have tried to construct an argument which uses both close reading and historical context. Imagining the future in the restoration: a critical comparison of the poetry of John Wilmot, Earl of Rochester and John Milton. Line of Argument: This essay will argue that Rochester’s poetry is not only everywhere fascinated by time, regularly exploring what it is and how it operates, but that this interest betrays his sophisticated engagement with contemporary political philosophy.

It will closely interrogate the forms of several of Rochester’s time-related poems for their political sensibilities. It will then contrast those poetic forms and plato summary, political sensibilities with those in the poetry of John Milton and constituent, especially Paradise Regained. Simple Definition! Milton as I shall show with the use of historical evidence is very differently socially and politically placed, indeed at the other end of the ideological spectrum from the constituent Earl of Rochester. I shall show that the issues difference is one of dispossession (Rochester) and providence (Milton). Rochester’s narrators exist in fear of, and constituent, subject to an arbitrary and absolute future; Milton’s Paradise Regained, on the other hand, asks an imagined republican reader to wait in is stock market on mlk, anticipation of a future in which God will deliver their political success. I shall explore the way in which Rochester’s pessimism the idea and constituent examples, tone of dispossession in plato meno, his poetry and Milton’s optimism the visionary quality of his providential allegory stand in contrast to the respective fortunes of the constituent political groups to which those poets actually belonged and at the particular times when the poems I’m discussing here were written and published: i.e. Rochester’s being part of the royal court and Milton’s being displaced from his office at the restoration of Charles II. This will arrive at, by way of conclusion, the issues of cloning demonstrable sadness of some of Rochester’s verse which indicates the complex circumspection with which he viewed his own aristocratic, political community and its limited expectations of monarchical authority. HELP FOR THIS PARTICULAR ASSESSMENT. Details of what you are expected to do are on the departmental website at: There you will find a list of constituent texts and details of how to find them on EEBO (Early English Books Online).

Then I’d like you to come and diffident define, see me at the end of examples term with a title and a line of argument. You could also, if you wish, bring a longer essay plan.

Gabriel won't be here after the holidays--he lives in London--but do come and see me, his group, if you need a person to talk to. USING THE OXFORD ENGLISH DICTIONARY. The OED can be found online (through the Warwick network) at When we read an edited text we often have a helpful gloss which an editor has provided so that words and phrases that we don’t understand are defined for examples, us. In this assignment you will have to put together that gloss for issues of cloning, yourself and the best way to start to do that is with the OED. The OED is an extraordinary resource that will give you assistance in all sorts of ways.

For example: a) it will obviously help you to understand words which you don’t understand or unusual applications. It will also help you to find obsolete and dialect words. b) it will help you to see how words have changed their meanings or emphases over time. c) it will help you to identify puns. This is is Improving Short-Range useful for working out which of several definitions might apply to the word you’re looking at. Look at the examples, that is the quotations that are given, and note their dates. It may be that you find that the word was new or recently borrowed from another language.

Click the ‘date chart’ button to see the uses represented on a time line. It may be that you will find that a word is used differently and in different contexts at different points of the seventeenth century: what might the use of a particular word / phrase tell us about an author’s engagement with political, historical or sociological movements? e) Look at the etymology: this might tell you about how the text you’re looking at engages with particular fashions or imperial encounters. Constituent Examples! Look up, for moral, example, ‘chocolate’ where does the word come from? At what period does it come into the language? f) the examples given in the dictionary will also help you to see how other contemporaries used the examples word or phrase you’re interested in, and in what sort of contexts it came up. In this way it can operate as a concordance. You should investigate the concordances available in How RFID is Improving Short-Range, the library, by the way. Constituent! Similarly they will give you a sense of how a particular word or phrase is used elsewhere.

You should use the OED not just to look up words that you don’t understand but also other words, especially those that are used in an unfamiliar way. You will find more interesting things if you look up lexical, rather than grammatical words. That means verbs, adjectives, adverbs and nouns rather than prepositions, articles and pronouns. You need to remember that there was no standard spelling in the early modern period; the move to standardize spelling did not occur until the middle of the eighteenth century. How RFID Is Improving Short-Range! This means that when you have a word you don’t understand it you may not get an adequate definition by putting it in exactly as it is into the OED search box. Try that first but if it isn’t found, or you get a definition that is not right (i.e. the examples indicate that its earliest use was a lot later than your text) you should try different spellings. In particular the vowels are often interchangeable. Try every vowel combination that you can think of. Try substituting ts and cs, us and vs and other related consonants. Try out the OED. Look up the following words: how have their meanings have changed?

Where do the words come from? How were the words used at different points in history? And in the seventeenth century in particular? Department of English and Comparative Literary Studies, Humanities Building, University of Warwick, Coventry CV4 7AL.
