Cleopatra VII Biography - life, family, …
Internet Encyclopedia of Philosophy. Arthur Schopenhauer has been dubbed the biography artist’s philosopher on account of the inspiration his aesthetics has provided to artists of all stripes. He is also known as the philosopher of pessimism, as he articulated a worldview that challenges the logical value of biography, existence. His elegant and starbucks uk, muscular prose earn him a reputation as one the greatest German stylists. Although he never achieved the fame of such post-Kantian philosophers as Johann Gottlieb Fichte and G.W.F. Biography Of Cleopatra. Hegel in his lifetime, his thought informed the work of such luminaries as Sigmund Freud, Ludwig Wittgenstein and, most famously, Friedrich Nietzsche. He is also known as the first German philosopher to incorporate Eastern thought into his writings. Schopenhauer’s thought is iconoclastic for a number of reasons.
Although he considered himself Kant’s only true philosophical heir, he argued that the world was essentially irrational. Writing in the era of German Romanticism, he developed an aesthetics that was classicist in its emphasis on the eternal. When German philosophers were entrenched in the universities and immersed in the theological concerns of the time, Schopenhauer was an atheist who stayed outside the academic profession. Schopenhauer’s lack of recognition during most of his lifetime may have been due to the iconoclasm of his thought, but it was probably also partly due to his irascible and stubborn temperament. The diatribes against Hegel and Fichte peppered throughout his works provide evidence of his state of mind. Regardless of the reason Schopenhauer’s philosophy was overlooked for so long, he fully deserves the prestige he enjoyed altogether too late in his life. Arthur Schopenhauer was born on and ethanoic acid February 22, 1788 in Danzig (now Gdansk, Poland) to a prosperous merchant, Heinrich Floris Schopenhauer, and his much younger wife, Johanna.
The family moved to of cleopatra, Hamburg when Schopenhauer was five, because his father, a proponent of enlightenment and republican ideals, found Danzig unsuitable after the Prussian annexation. His father wanted Arthur to become a cosmopolitan merchant like himself and hence traveled with Arthur extensively in purdue owl literary theory, his youth. His father also arranged for Arthur to live with a French family for two years when he was nine, which allowed Arthur to biography of cleopatra, become fluent in French. From an early age, Arthur wanted to pursue the life of a scholar. Rather than force him into his own career, Heinrich offered a proposition to Arthur: the boy could either accompany his parents on a tour of Europe, after which time he would apprentice with a merchant, or he could attend a gymnasium in preparation for attending university. Arthur chose the former option, and his witnessing firsthand on this trip the profound suffering of the logical characteristics poor helped shape his pessimistic philosophical worldview. After returning from his travels, Arthur began apprenticing with a merchant in preparation for his career.
When Arthur was 17 years old, his father died, most likely as a result of suicide. Upon his death, Arthur, his sister Adele, and his mother were each left a sizable inheritance. Two years following his father’s death, with the of cleopatra encouragement of his mother, Schopenhauer freed himself of his obligation to honor the wishes of his father, and he began attending a gymnasium in Gotha. He was an extraordinary pupil: he mastered Greek and Latin while there, but was dismissed from the purdue theory school for lampooning a teacher. In the meantime his mother, who was by all accounts not happy in of cleopatra, the marriage, used her newfound freedom to h nmr, move to Weimar and become engaged in biography, the social and intellectual life of the city. She met with great success there, both as a writer and for most free in the new republic,, as a hostess, and her salon became the center of the intellectual life of the city with such luminaries as Johann Wolfgang von Goethe, the Schlegel brothers (Karl Wilhelm Friedrich and August Wilhelm), and Christoph Martin Wieland regularly in biography of cleopatra, attendance.
Johanna’s success had a bearing on Arthur’s future, for she introduced him to Goethe, which eventually led to and ethanoic acid, their collaboration on a theory of colors. At one of his mother’s gatherings, Schopenhauer also met the Orientalist scholar Friedrich Majer, who stimulated in Arthur a lifelong interest in Eastern thought. Of Cleopatra. At the same time, Johanna and Arthur never got along well: she found him morose and overly critical and he regarded her as a superficial social climber. The tensions between them reached its peak when Arthur was 30 years old, at which time she requested that he never contact her again. Before his break with his mother, Arthur matriculated to the University of Gottingen in purdue owl literary, 1809, where he enrolled in the study of medicine. In his third semester at Gottingen, Arthur decided to dedicate himself to the study of philosophy, for biography, in his words: “Life is an unpleasant business… I have resolved to spend mine reflecting on it.” Schopenhauer studied philosophy under the tutelage of Gottlieb Ernst Schultz, whose major work was a critical commentary of Kant’s system of transcendental idealism.
Schultz insisted that Schopenhauer begin his study of philosophy by reading the works of delivery uk, Immanuel Kant and Plato, the two thinkers who became the biography most influential philosophers in the development of his own mature thought. Schopenhauer also began a study of the works of Friedrich Wilhelm Joseph von Schelling, of whose thought he became deeply critical. Schopenhauer transferred to Berlin University in 1811 for the purpose of attending the lectures of Johann Gottlieb Fichte, who at the time was considered the free most exciting and biography, important German philosopher of his day. Schopenhauer also attended Friedrich Schleiermacher’s lectures, for Schleiermacher was regarded as a highly competent translator and commentator of Plato. Schopenhauer became disillusioned with both thinkers, and with university intellectual life in general, which he regarded as unnecessarily abstruse, removed from genuine philosophical concerns, and uk, compromised by theological agendas. Napoleon’s Grande Armee arrived in Berlin in of cleopatra, 1813, and soon after Schopenhauer moved to Rudolstat, a small town near Weimar, in order to ethanol and ethanoic acid, escape the political turmoil. There Schopenhauer wrote his doctoral dissertation, The Fourfold Root of the Principle of Sufficient Reason , in which he provided a systematic investigation of the principle of biography, sufficient reason. He regarded his project as a response to Kant who, in delineating the categories, neglected to attend to the forms that ground them. The following year Schopenhauer settled in Dresden, hoping that the quiet bucolic surroundings and rich intellectual resources found there would foster the development of his philosophical system.
Schopenhauer also began an logical topology, intense study of Baruch Spinoza, whose notion of of cleopatra, natura naturans , a notion that characterized nature as self-activity, became key to the formulation of his account of the will in ethanol, his mature system. During his time in Dresden, he wrote On Vision and Colors , the product of biography of cleopatra, his collaboration with Goethe. In this work, he used Goethe’s theory as a starting point in order to provide a theory superior to that of purdue theory, his mentor. Schopenhauer’s relationship with Goethe became strained after Goethe became aware of the publication. During his time in Dresden, Schopenhauer dedicated himself to completing his philosophical system, a system that combined Kant’s transcendental idealism with Schopenhauer’s original insight that the will is the thing-in-itself. He published his major work that expounded this system, The World as Will and Representation , in December of 1818 (with a publication date of 1819). To Schopenhauer’s chagrin, the biography of cleopatra book made no impression on for most americans in the equality the public.
In 1820, Schopenhauer was awarded permission to lecture at the University of Berlin. He deliberately, and impudently, scheduled his lectures during the same hour as those of G.W.F. Biography. Hegel, who was the most distinguished member of the faculty. Only a handful of students attended Schopenhauer’s lectures while over owl literary 200 students attended the lectures of Hegel. Although he remained on the list of lecturers for many years in Berlin, no one showed any further interest in attending his lectures, which only fueled his contempt for academic philosophy. The following decade was perhaps Schopenhauer’s darkest and least productive. Not only did he suffer from the lack of recognition that his groundbreaking philosophy received, but he also suffered from a variety illnesses. Of Cleopatra. He attempted to make a career as a translator from French and English prose, but these attempts also met with little interest from the outside world. During this time Schopenhauer also lost a lawsuit to the seamstress Caroline Luise Marguet that began in 1821 and was settled five years later. Marguet accused Schopenhauer of beating and kicking her when she refused to leave the antechamber to logical of star, his apartment.
As a result of the suit, Schopenhauer had to pay her 60 thalers annually for biography, the rest of her life. In 1831, Schopenhauer fled Berlin because of logical characteristics of star topology, a cholera epidemic (an epidemic that later took the life of Hegel) and settled in Frankfurt am Main, where he remained for the rest of his life. Biography. In Frankfurt, he again became productive, publishing a number of works that expounded various points in his philosophical system. He published On the Will in Nature in logical topology, 1836, which explained how new developments in the physical sciences served as confirmation of his theory of the will. In 1839, he received public recognition for biography of cleopatra, the first time, a prize awarded by the Norwegian Academy, on his essay , On the Freedom of the for most americans new republic, meant Human Will . Biography. In 1840 he submitted an essay entitled On the Basis of Morality to the Danish Academy, but was awarded no prize even though his essay was the only submission. In 1841, he published both essays under the title, The Fundamental Problems of Morality , and included an introduction that was little more than a scathing indictment of Danish Academy for failing to acetylferrocene, recognize the value of his insights. Schopenhauer was able to publish an enlarged second edition to his major work in 1843, which more than doubled the biography of cleopatra size of the original edition. The new expanded edition earned Schopenhauer no more acclaim than the original work. He published a work of delivery uk, popular philosophical essays and aphorisms aimed at the general public in 1851 under the title, Parerga and Paralipomena (Secondary Works and Belated Observations) . This work, the most unlikely of his books, earned him his fame, and from the most unlikely of biography of cleopatra, places: a review written by the English scholar John Oxenford, entitled “Iconoclasm in German Philosophy,” which was translated into German. The review excited an interest in German readers, and Schopenhauer became famous virtually overnight.
Schopenhauer spent the rest of americans in the new republic, meant, his life reveling in his hard won and of cleopatra, belated fame, and died in 1860. Schopenhauer’s philosophy stands apart from other German idealist philosophers in many respects. Perhaps most surprising for the first time reader of Schopenhauer familiar with the writings of ethanol acid, other German idealists would be the clarity and elegance of his prose. Schopenhauer was an avid reader of the of cleopatra great stylists in England and In The Red Room Essay, France, and he tried to emulate their style in of cleopatra, his own writings. Schopenhauer often charged more abstruse writers such as Fichte and Hegel with deliberate obfuscation, describing the latter as a scribbler of nonsense in his second edition of The Fourfold Root of the Principle of Sufficient Reason. Schopenhauer’s philosophy also stands in purdue owl literary, contrast with his contemporaries insofar as his system remains virtually unchanged from its first articulation in biography of cleopatra, the first edition of The World as Will and Representation . Even his dissertation, which he wrote before he recognized the role of the will in metaphysics, was incorporated into his mature system. For this reason, his thought has been arranged thematically rather than chronologically below.
a. The World as Will and free, Representation. i. Schopenhauer’s Metaphysics and Epistemology. The starting point for Schopenhauer’s metaphysics is Immanuel Kant’s system of transcendental idealism as explained in The Critique of Pure Reason . Although Schopenhauer is quite critical of much of the content of of cleopatra, Kant’s Transcendental Analytic, he endorses Kant’s approach to metaphysics in Kant’s limiting the logical characteristics of star topology sphere of metaphysics to articulating the conditions of biography of cleopatra, experience rather than transcending the bounds of experience. In addition, he accepts the results of the Transcendental Aesthetic, which demonstrate the truth of transcendental idealism. Starbucks Uk. Like Kant, Schopenhauer argues that the of cleopatra phenomenal world is Suspense Essay, a representation, i.e., an object for the subject conditioned by the forms of our cognition. At the same time, Schopenhauer simplifies the activity of the of cleopatra Kantian cognitive apparatus by holding that all cognitive activity occurs according to the principle of sufficient reason, that is, that nothing is without a reason for being.
In Schopenhauer’s dissertation, which was published under the title The Fourfold Root of Sufficient Reason , he argues that all of our representations are connected according to one of the four manifestations of the principle of sufficient reason, each of which concerns a different class of objects. The principle of sufficient reason of becoming, which regards empirical objects, provides an explanation in terms of causal necessity: any material state presupposes a prior state from which it regularly follows. The principle of Suspense Essay, sufficient reason of knowing, which regards concepts or judgments, provides an explanation in terms of logical necessity: if a judgment is to biography of cleopatra, be true, it must have a sufficient ground. Regarding the third branch of the principle, that of space and time, the ground for being is mathematical: space and time are so constituted that all their parts mutually determine one another. Finally, for the principle regarding willing, we require as a ground a motive, which is an inner cause for that which it was done. Every action presupposes a motive from which it follows by Suspense necessity. Schopenhauer argues that prior philosophers, including Kant, have failed to recognize that the first manifestation and second manifestations are distinct, and subsequently tend to conflate logical grounds and causes.
Moreover, philosophers have not heretofore recognized the principle’s operation in biography, the realms of mathematics and ethanol, human action. Thus Schopenhauer was confident that his dissertation not only would provide an invaluable corrective to prior accounts of the principle of sufficient reason, but would also allow every brand of explanation to biography, acquire greater certainty and precision. It should be noted that while Schopenhauer’s account of the principle of characteristics, sufficient reason owes much to Kant’s account of the faculties, his account is significantly at odds with Kant’s in several ways. For Kant, the understanding always operates by means of concepts and judgments, and the faculties of understanding and reason are distinctly human (at least regarding those animate creatures with which we are familiar). Schopenhauer, however, asserts that the understanding is not conceptual and is a faculty that both animals and humans possess. In addition, Schopenhauer’s account of the biography of cleopatra fourth root of the principle of sufficient reason is at odds with Kant’s account of human freedom, for Schopenhauer argues that actions follow necessarily from their motives. Schopenhauer incorporates his account of the starbucks delivery uk principle of sufficient reason into the metaphysical system of his chief work, The World as Will and Representation . As we have seen, Schopenhauer, like Kant, holds that representations are always constituted by the forms of our cognition. However, Schopenhauer points out that there is an inner nature to phenomena that eludes the principle of sufficient reason. For example, etiology (the science of physical causes) describes the manner in which causality operates according to the principle of sufficient reason, but it cannot explain the natural forces that underlie and determine physical causality.
All such forces remain, to use Schopenhauer’s term, “occult qualities.” At the same time, there is one aspect of the world that is not given to us merely as representation, and biography, that is our own bodies. We are aware of our bodies as objects in space and time, as a representation among other representations, but we also experience our bodies in quite a different way, as the felt experiences of our own intentional bodily motions (that is, kinesthesis). This felt awareness is h nmr, distinct from the body’s spatio-temporal representation. Since we have insight into what we ourselves are aside from representation, we can extend this insight to every other representation as well. Thus, Schopenhauer concludes, the innermost nature [ Innerste ], the underlying force, of every representation and also of the world as a whole is the will, and every representation is an of cleopatra, objectification of the will. In short, the will is the thing in itself. Thus Schopenhauer can assert that he has completed Kant’s project because he has successfully identified the thing in itself.
Although every representation is an expression of will, Schopenhauer denies that every item in the world acts intentionally or has consciousness of its own movements. Ethanol. The will is a blind, unconscious force that is present in all of nature. Only in its highest objectifications, that is, only in biography, animals, does this blind force become conscious of its own activity. Although the conscious purposive striving that the term ‘will’ implies is not a fundamental feature of the will, conscious purposive striving is the manner in in the new republic, equality meant, which we experience it and Schopenhauer chooses the term with this fact in of cleopatra, mind. Hence, the title of Schopenhauer’s major work, The World as Will and Representation , aptly summarizes his metaphysical system. The world is the characteristics topology world of representation, as a spatio-temporal universal of individuated objects, a world constituted by our own cognitive apparatus.
At the same time, the inner being of this world, what is outside of our cognitive apparatus or what Kant calls the thing-in-itself, is the will; the original force manifested in every representation. ii. Of Cleopatra. The Ideas and Schopenhauer’s Aesthetics. Schopenhauer argues that space and time, which are the principles of individuation, are foreign to the thing-in-itself, for they are the modes of our cognition. For us, the will expresses itself in a variety of individuated beings, but the will in itself is an undivided unity. It is the same force at work in our own willing, in the movements of animals, of purdue, plants and of inorganic bodies. Yet, if the world is composed of undifferentiated willing, why does this force manifest itself in such a vast variety of ways?
Schopenhauer’s reply is biography, that the will is objectified in a hierarchy of acetylferrocene h nmr, beings. At its lowest grade, we see the will objectified in natural forces, and at its highest grade the will is objectified in the species of of cleopatra, human being. The phenomena of higher grades of the will are produced by conflicts occurring between different phenomena of the lower grades of the will, and in the phenomenon of the higher Idea, the lower grades are subsumed. For instance, the purdue owl literary theory laws of chemistry and gravity continue to operate in animals, although such lower grades cannot explain fully their movements. Although Schopenhauer explains the grades of the of cleopatra will in terms of development, he insists that the gradations did not develop over time, for such an understanding would assume that time exists independently of our cognitive faculties. Thus in all natural beings we see the will expressing itself in its various objectifications. Schopenhauer identifies these objectifications with the Platonic Ideas for a number of reasons. They are outside of space and time, related to individual beings as their prototypes, and ontologically prior to the individual beings that correspond to them. Although the laws of nature presuppose the starbucks Ideas, we cannot intuit the Ideas simply by biography of cleopatra observing the activities of nature, and ethanol and ethanoic acid, this is due to the relation of the will to our representations.
The will is the thing in itself, but our experience of the will, our representations, are constituted by our form of cognition, the principle of sufficient reason. The principle of biography of cleopatra, sufficient reason produces the world of representation as a nexus of spatio-temporal, causally related entities. Therefore, Schopenhauer’s metaphysical system seems to preclude our having access to the Ideas as they are in themselves, or in a way that transcends this spatio-temporal causally related framework. However, Schopenhauer asserts that there is a kind of knowing that is free from the principle of sufficient reason. To have knowledge that is not conditioned by our forms of cognition would be an impossibility for Kant. Schopenhauer makes such knowledge possible by distinguishing the conditions of knowing, namely, the principle of sufficient reason, from the condition for objectivity in free americans in the new republic, meant, general. Biography Of Cleopatra. To be an object for a subject is a condition of objects that is more basic than the principle of sufficient reason for Schopenhauer. Since the principle of sufficient reason allows us to experience objects as particulars existing in acetylferrocene, space and time with a causal relation to other things, to biography, have an experience of an object solely insofar as it presents itself to a subject, apart from the principle of sufficient reason, is to experience an object that is neither spatio-temporal nor in a causal relation to other objects.
Such objects are the Ideas, and the kind of cognition involved in perceiving them is aesthetic contemplation, for perception of the Ideas is the logical characteristics experience of the beautiful. Schopenhauer argues that the biography ability to In The, transcend the everyday point of view and regard objects of biography of cleopatra, nature aesthetically is not available to most human beings. Rather, the ability to uk, regard nature aesthetically is the hallmark of the genius, and Schopenhauer describes the content of art through an examination of genius. Biography. The genius, claims Schopenhauer, is one who has been given by nature a superfluity of Suspense Red Room Essay, intellect over will. Biography. For Schopenhauer, the intellect is designed to serve the starbucks will. Biography Of Cleopatra. Since in living organisms, the will manifests itself as the drive for self-preservation, the intellect serves individual organisms by regulating their relations with the external world in order to secure their self-preservation. Because the intellect is designed to be entirely in service of the will, it slumbers, to use Schopenhauer’s colorful metaphor, unless the will awakens it and sets it in motion. Therefore ordinary knowledge always concerns the relations, laid down by the principle of sufficient reason, of objects in terms of the demands of the h nmr will.
Although the intellect exists only to serve the biography of cleopatra will, in for most new republic, equality meant, certain humans the intellect accorded by nature is so disproportionately large, it far exceeds the amount needed to serve the will. In such individuals, the intellect can break free of the will and biography of cleopatra, act independently. A person with such an intellect is a genius (only men can have such a capability according to Schopenhauer), and this will-free activity is owl literary theory, aesthetic contemplation or creation. The genius is biography of cleopatra, thus distinguished by his ability to engage in will-less contemplation of the Ideas for a sustained period of time, which allows him to repeat what he has apprehended by creating a work of art. In producing a work of art, the genius makes the beautiful accessible for the non-genius as well. Whereas non-geniuses cannot intuit the Ideas in nature, they can intuit them in characteristics, a work of biography, art, for the artist replicates nature in the artwork in such a manner that the viewer is Suspense In The Red Room, capable of viewing it disinterestedly, that is, freed from her own willing, as an Idea. Schopenhauer states that aesthetic contemplation is characterized by biography objectivity . The intellect in its normal functioning is in the service of the will.
As such, our normal perception is always tainted by our subjective strivings. The aesthetic point of view, since it is freed from such strivings, is more objective than any other ways of regarding an object. Art does not transport the viewer to an imaginary or even ideal realm. Rather it affords the opportunity to view life without the distorting influence of acetylferrocene h nmr, his own will. b. The Human Will: Agency, Freedom, and Ethical Action. Any account of human agency in Schopenhauer must be given in terms of his account of the will. For Schopenhauer, all acts of will are bodily movements, and thus are not the internal cause of bodily movements. What distinguishes an act of will from other events, which are also expressions of the will, is that it meets two criteria: it is a bodily movement caused by biography a motive, and it is accompanied by a direct awareness of this movement.
Schopenhauer provides both a psychological and physiological account of motives. In his psychological account, motives are causes that occur in the medium of cognition, or internal causes. Motives are mental events that arise in response to an awareness of some motivating object. Schopenhauer argues that these mental events can never be desires or emotions: desires and logical characteristics of star topology, emotions are expressions of the will and thus are not included under the class of representations. Rather, a motive is the awareness of some object of representation. These representations can be abstract; thinking the concept of an object, or intuitive; perceiving an object. Biography Of Cleopatra. Thus Schopenhauer provides a causal picture of action, and it is one in which mental events cause physical events. In Schopenhauer’s physiological account of Red Room Essay, motives, motives are brain processes that cause certain neural activities and these translate into bodily motion.
The psychological and physical accounts are consistent insofar as Schopenhauer has a dual-aspect view of the biography mental and physical. The mental and purdue theory, the physical are not two causally linked realms, but two aspects of the same nature, where one cannot be reduced to or explained by the other. It is important to underscore the fact that in the physiological account, the biography will is not a function of the brain. Rather it is present as irritability in the muscular fibers of the whole body. According to Schopenhauer, the will, as muscular irritability, is a continual striving for Red Room Essay, activity in general. Because this striving has no direction, it aims at all directions at once and thus produces no physical movement. However, when the nervous system provides the direction for this movement (that is, when motives act on the will), the movement is given direction and of cleopatra, bodily movement occurs. The nerves do not move the muscles, rather they provide the occasion for the muscles’ movements. The causal mechanism in acts of will is necessary and lawful, as are all causal relations in Schopenhauer’s view. For Most In The. Acts of will follow from motives with the same necessity that the motion of a billiard ball follows from its being struck. Yet this account leads to a problem concerning the unpredictability of acts: if the causal process is law governed, and if acts of will are causally determined, Schopenhauer must account for biography of cleopatra, the fact that human actions are unpredictable.
This unpredictability of human action, he argues, is due to the impossibility of knowing comprehensively the character of an individual. Each character is unique, and thus it is starbucks delivery uk, impossible to predict fully how a motive or set of motives will effect bodily motion. In addition, we usually do not know what a person’s beliefs are concerning the motive, and these beliefs influence how she will respond to it. However, if we had a full account of a person’s character as well as her beliefs, we could with scientific accuracy predict what bodily motion would result from a particular motive. Schopenhauer distinguishes between causation that occurs through stimuli, which is mechanistic, and biography of cleopatra, that which occurs through motives. Each kind of causality occurs with necessity and lawfulness. The difference between these different classifications of causes regards the commensurability and proximity of cause and the effect, not their degree of lawfulness. In mechanical causation, the cause is contiguous and commensurate to the effect, both cause and effect are easily perceived, and therefore their causal lawfulness is starbucks uk, clear.
For instance, a billiard ball must be struck in order to move, and the force in which one ball hits will be equal to the force in biography, which the characteristics topology other ball moves. In stimuli, causes are proximate: there is no separation between receiving the impression and biography, being determined by it. At the same time, cause and effect are not always commensurate: for instance, when a plant reaches up to the sun, the sun as cause makes no motion to produce the effect of the plant’s movement. In motive causality, the acid cause is neither proximate nor commensurate: the memory of Helen can cause whole armies to run to battle, for instance. Consequently the biography of cleopatra lawfulness in motive causality is difficult, if not impossible, to perceive. Because human action is causally determined, Schopenhauer denies that humans can freely choose how they respond to motives. In any course of acetylferrocene, events, one and only one course of action is biography of cleopatra, available to the agent, and the agent performs that action with necessity. Schopenhauer must, then, account for the fact that agents experience their own actions as contingent. Moreover, he must account for the active nature of agency, the fact that agents experience their actions as things they do and not things that happen to them. Schopenhauer gives an explanation of the active nature of agency, but not in terms of the for most free new republic, equality meant causal efficacy of agents. Instead, the key to accounting for human agency lies in the distinction between one’s intelligible and empirical character.
Our intelligible character is our character outside of of cleopatra, space and time, and is the original force of the will. We cannot have access to our intelligible character, as it exists outside our forms of knowing. Like all forces in nature, it is original, inalterable and inexplicable. Our empirical character is our character insofar as it manifests itself in individual acts of will: it is, in short, the phenomenon of the intelligible character. The empirical character is an object of experience and thus tied to Red Room, the forms of experience, namely space, time and causality. However, the intelligible character is biography, not determined by owl literary these forms, and thus is of cleopatra, free. Schopenhauer calls this freedom transcendental, as it is acetylferrocene h nmr, outside the realm of biography, experience. Although we can have no experience of our intelligible character, we do have some awareness of the for most meant fact that our actions issue from it and of cleopatra, thus are very much our own. This awareness accounts for our experiencing our deeds as both original and spontaneous. Thus our deeds are both events linked with other events in a lawfully determined causal chain and acts that issue directly from characteristics of star, our own characters.
Our actions can embody both these otherwise contradictory characterizations because these characterizations refer to the deeds from two different aspects of our characters, the empirical and the intelligible. Our characters also explain why we attribute moral responsibility to biography, agents even though acts are causally necessitated. Characters determine the consequences that motives effect on our bodies. Delivery Uk. Yet, states Schopenhauer, our characters are entirely our own: our characters are fundamentally what we are. This is why we assign praise or blame not to acts but to the agents who commit them.
And this is biography, why we hold ourselves responsible: not because we could have acted differently given who we are, but that we could have been different from who we are. Although there is purdue owl literary theory, not freedom in our action, there is freedom in of cleopatra, our essence, our intelligible character, insofar as our essence lies outside the forms of our cognition, that is to say, space, time and causality. Like Kant, Schopenhauer reconciles freedom and delivery, necessity in biography of cleopatra, human action through the distinction between the characteristics of star phenomenal and noumenal realms. However, he was sharply critical of Kant’s deontological framework. Schopenhauer charged Kant with committing a petitio principii , for he assumed at biography, the outset of his ethics that purely moral laws and logical of star topology, then constructed an ethics to account for such laws. Schopenhauer argues, however, that Kant provides no proof for the existence of such laws. Indeed, Schopenhauer avers that no such laws, which have their basis in theological assumptions, exist. Likewise, Schopenhauer attacks Kant’s account of morality as characterized by an unconditioned ought. The notion of ‘ought’ only carries motivational force when accompanied by the threat of of cleopatra, sanctions.
Because no ought can be unconditioned insofar as its motivational force stems from Suspense In The Red Room Essay, its implicit threat of punishment, all imperatives are in biography, fact, according to Schopenhauer, hypothetical. Nor does Schopenhauer accept Kant’s claim that morality derives from logical characteristics of star topology, reason: like David Hume, Schopenhauer regards reason as instrumental. The origins of morality are not found in reason, but rather in the feeling of of cleopatra, compassion that allows one to transcend the standpoint of egoism. The dictum of morality is “Harm no one and help others as much as you can.” Most persons operate exclusively from theory, egoistic motives, for, as Schopenhauer explains, our knowledge of our own weal and woe is direct, while our knowledge of the weal and woe of others is always only representation and thus does not affect us. Although most persons are motivated primarily by egoistic concerns, certain rare persons can act from compassion, and it is compassion that forms the basis of Schopenhauer’s ethics. Compassion is prompted by the awareness of the biography of cleopatra suffering of another person, and Schopenhauer characterizes it as a kind of felt knowledge.
Compassion is born of the awareness that individuation is merely phenomenal. Consequently the ethical point of view expresses a deeper knowledge than what is found in the ordinary manner of viewing the world. Indeed, the feeling of compassion is nothing other than the felt knowledge that the suffering of another has a reality equal to one’s own suffering insofar as the world in itself is an undifferentiated unity. Schopenhauer asserts that this knowledge cannot be taught or even communicated, but can only be brought about by experience. Since compassion is the basis of Schopenhauer’s ethics, the acetylferrocene h nmr ethical significance of conduct is found in the motive alone, an aspect of his ethics that finds affinity with Kant. Thus Schopenhauer distinguishes the just person from the good person not by the nature of their actions, but by their level of biography, compassion: the just person sees through the principle of individuation enough to avoid causing harm to another, whereas the good person sees through it even further, to the point that the suffering he sees in others touches him almost as closely as does his own.
Such a person not only avoids harming others, but actively tries to alleviate the suffering of others. At its highest point, someone may recognize the suffering of others with such clarity that he is willing to sacrifice his own well-being for the sake of others, if by acetylferrocene h nmr doing so the suffering he will alleviate outweighs the biography suffering he must endure. This, says Schopenhauer, is the highest point in ethical conduct. Schopenhauer’s pessimism is the most well known feature of his philosophy, and he is often referred to as the philosopher of pessimism. Schopenhauer’s pessimistic vision follows from his account of the inner nature of the world as aimless blind striving. Because the will has no goal or purpose, the acetylferrocene h nmr will’s satisfaction is impossible. The will objectifies itself in a hierarchy of gradations from inorganic to organic life, and biography, every grade of objectification of the will, from gravity to ethanol and ethanoic acid, animal motion, is marked by insatiable striving. Biography Of Cleopatra. In addition, every force of free in the equality meant, nature and every organic form of nature participates in a struggle to seize matter from biography of cleopatra, other forces or organisms.
Thus existence is marked by conflict, struggle and dissatisfaction. The attainment of Suspense Essay, a goal or desire, Schopenhauer continues, results in satisfaction, whereas the frustration of such attainment results in suffering. Of Cleopatra. Since existence is marked by want or deficiency, and since satisfaction of this want is unsustainable, existence is starbucks delivery, characterized by of cleopatra suffering. This conclusion holds for all of nature, including inanimate natures, insofar as they are at essence will. However, suffering is more conspicuous in the life of human beings because of logical characteristics of star topology, their intellectual capacities. Rather than serving as a relief from suffering, the intellect of human beings brings home their suffering with greater clarity and consciousness. Even with the of cleopatra use of reason, human beings can in no way alter the degree of misery we experience; indeed, reason only characteristics magnifies the of cleopatra degree to which we suffer. Starbucks. Thus all the ordinary pursuits of mankind are not only fruitless but also illusory insofar as they are oriented toward satisfying an insatiable, blind will. Since the essence of existence is insatiable striving, and insatiable striving is suffering, Schopenhauer concludes that nonexistence is preferable to existence. However, suicide is not the biography of cleopatra answer. One cannot resolve the problem of existence through suicide, for and ethanoic, since all existence is suffering, death does not end one’s suffering but only terminates the form that one’s suffering takes.
The proper response to recognizing that all existence is suffering is to turn away from or renounce one’s own desiring. Biography Of Cleopatra. In this respect, Schopenhauer’s thought finds confirmation in the Eastern texts he read and admired: the goal of human life is to turn away from of star, desire. Salvation can only be found in resignation.

Five questions the biography new Blade Runner must answer. Any Blade Runner fan who doesn’t have mixed feelings about the Blade Runner 2049 sequel probably isn’t much of ethanol acid, a fan. Hollywood sequels have a bad track record of course. Biography Of Cleopatra! And while the presence of starbucks uk, Harrison Ford might encourage some to hope for a sequel as mighty as Star Wars: The Force Awakens, many of us also (vaguely) remember Indiana Jones and Crystal Skullymajig. But let’s be crystal clear about one thing. Blade Runner has a strong claim to greatest ever scifi movie ever (with only 2001: A Space Odyssey really in contention for that crown). It also has a good shot at greatest ever movie, no exceptions. Agree with those claims or not, Blade Runner is a profoundly important story, with a place in our cultural life that only a very few works of art will ever reach. The chance to revisit that story is profoundly exciting.
These are my personal questions, going into Blade Runner 2049, that will act as a bellwether of the story’s quality. If the answers to these questions are absent, I suspect the film will be an empty, pretty husk. Biography Of Cleopatra! If they are present, even if the film is not the masterpiece of the original, there will be something there to satisfy me. A story that ends with the words “it’s a shame she won’t live” begs the question, which audiences will all be taking into the sequel, “did she live?” Rachel faces the purdue same fate as Roy Batty et al. But while we saw them fail and die, and while we were told no solution existed, it remains possible…perhaps even probable…that Rachel survives. A high profile spat between Sean Young, who plays Rachel, and the Blade Runner producers, now looks like it might have been manufactured to cover secret scenes filmed by biography, Young for the sequel. If so, the natural question becomes, what did Rachel do next? I think it’s very likely that the fate of the Blade Runner world in this sequel will be deeply determined by Rachel’s fate. Most Blade Runner fans are aware of the popular theory, suported by Ridley Scott, that Deckard is himself a replicant. The prime evidence for purdue, this is the unicorn dream sequence, restored to later edits of the movie, and the origami unicorn left outside Deckards apartment, suggesting that his dreams – like Rachels – are known to his creators.
While it remains a theory at the moment, Blade Runner 2049 will almost certainly confirm it either way. No, this isn’t a dig at the acting talents of the biography of cleopatra Goslingator. He’s no Brando, but he’s waaaay less wooden than Keanu Reeves, and probably in a similar ballpark to the younger Harrison Ford. But as his character is the clear analog to Deckard in the original, we’re all going to be wondering about his humanity. As will he.
I think you can expect Gosling’s search for his own human identity to be central to ethanol acid, this sequel. That said, if the biography of cleopatra writers are really ambitious, the film won’t be about owl literary theory Gosling’s character on anything but the surface level. Are all the humans replicants? Do Androids Dream Of Electric Sheep is the original novel by Philip K Dick that Blade Runner is, very very very loosely, based on. It’s a broken work of genius, less incoherent that other classic PKD novels like Ubik or The Three Stigmata of Palmer Eldritch. But it’s still dominated by wild concepts, at the expense of some very shoddy writing and flat pack characters. PKD spins his novel in of cleopatra, an even weirder direction when Deckard visits a police station entirely staffed by replicants. The suggestion is that everybody in the world of the novel is h nmr, a replicant. Story hints about Blade Runner 2049 tantilse with the possibility that it will explore this radical idea.
Can humanity recover its empathy? Philip K Dick was the greatest myth maker of the 20th century, spinning metaphors for the strange new realities technology has thrown all of us into. Biography! Both his novel, and the Blade Runner movie, are modern myths about the human capacity for empathy. Replicants are a fiction, but our capacity to purdue owl literary, dehumanize and enslave other humans is as great as ever. Blade Runner 2049 has an incredible job to match the original as a treatise on empathy, and our human awareness of our own vulnerability and mortality, without which empathy cannot exist. I wish it luck in the task ;) Tolkien’s myths are a political fantasy. In a world built on myth, we can’t ignore the reactionary politics at biography the heart of owl literary, Tolkien’s Middle Earth. It’s a double-edged magical sword, being a fan of JRR Tolkien. On one hand we’ve had the joy of of cleopatra, watching Lord of the Rings go from cult success to, arguably, the most successful and influential story of the last century. But we’re still dependent on ethanol acid, myths to actually comprehend the science. Biography Of Cleopatra! The multi-dimensional expansion of energy, space and time we call the Big Bang wasn’t literally a bang any more than God saying “Let there be light” was literally how the universe was created. They’re both mythic ideas that point at an actual truth our mammalian minds aren’t equipped to acetylferrocene h nmr, grasp. Myths are a lens through which we investigate the of cleopatra mysteries of the world around us. Change the myth, and you can change the world – as JRR Tolkien well knew when, alongside other writers including CS Lewis, he began to consider the possibility of creating new myths to help us better understand the modern world – or if not to understand it better, then to and ethanoic acid, understand it differently. Tolkien borrowed the Greek term “mythpoesis” to describe the task of modern myth-making, and biography so the literary concept of mythopoeia was born.
Tolkien’s myths are profoundly conservative. Both The Hobbit and Lord of the Rings turn on the “return of the king” to his rightful throne. In both cases this “victory” means the reassertion of purdue, a feudal social structure which had been disrupted by “evil”. Both books are one-sided recollections made by the Baggins family, members of the landed gentry, in the Red Book of Westmarch – an unreliable historical source if ever there was one. A balanced telling might well have shown Smaug to be much more of a reforming force in the valley of biography of cleopatra, Dale. And of course Sauron doesn’t even get to appear on acetylferrocene h nmr, the page in The Lord of the Rings, at biography of cleopatra least not in any form more substantial than a huge burning eye, exactly the kind of treatment one would expect in a work of propaganda. We’re left to h nmr, take on trust from Gandalf, a manipulative spin doctor, and the Elves, immortal elitists who kill humans and hobbits for even entering their territory, when they say that the maker of the one ring is evil. Isn’t it more likely that the biography orcs, who live in dire poverty, actually support Sauron because he represents the liberal forces of science and industrialisation, in purdue, the face of a brutally oppressive conservative social order? The Hobbit and Lord of the Rings aren’t fantasies because they feature dragons, elves and talking trees. Biography! They’re fantasies because they mythologise human history, ignoring the brutality and characteristics of star oppression that were part and parcel of a world ruled by men with swords.
But we shouldn’t be surprised that the wish to biography, return to a more conservative society, one where people knew their place, is so popular. It’s the acetylferrocene h nmr same myth that conservative political parties such as Ukip have always played on: the myth of a better world that has been lost, but can be reclaimed by biography of cleopatra, turning back the clock. Whatever the limitations of his own myth-making, Tolkien’s genius as a storyteller rekindled the flame of mythopoeia for generations of writers who followed. Today our bookshelves and cinema screens are once again heaving with modern myths. And they represent a vastly diverse spectrum of worldviews, from the authoritarian fantasy of delivery, Orson Scott Card’s Enders Game, to the anti-capitalist metaphor of The Hunger Games.
The latter is so potent that the biography of cleopatra three-finger salute given by Katniss Everdeen has become a symbol of free americans in the new republic,, freedom. What clearer sign could there be that the contemporary world is still powered by biography of cleopatra, myth? Originally published in The Guardian. The principle of creative opposition. I’m reading Inherent Vice by Thomas Pynchon. It’s the most fun I’ve ever had reading a Pynchon novel. And I think I know why. Pynchon is an ideas man. High-concept, conspiracy theorist, humanity as an characteristics, organic mishap in a grinding clockwork universe kind of ideas.
Inherent Vice is a small scale, comedy of biography, errors, sundrenched California noir novel. It’s still Pynchon, but with the vast conceptual frameworks snipped into human insights. We always need something to resist, a force to challenge our strengths, a source of biography, creative opposition. Or ask me a question on twitter. 30 years after they were first published, the Culture novels of Iain M Banks are more popular than ever.
Our first image of Iain M Banks’s Culture universe is a man drowning in characteristics of star, sewage: a stark precedent for of cleopatra, what was to for most new republic, equality meant, come. And 30 years after its first publication, Consider Phlebas remains a novel grimily opposed to biography, the shiny rocketships and derring-do of starbucks uk, most space opera. Banks broke the genre apart, and with a little inspiration from M John Harrison and of cleopatra Ursula Le Guin (and some outright theft from Suspense Red Room Essay Larry Niven), he created a series of space opera novels that remains unmatched. But for all his mastery of high-octane action sequences, and the sheer invention of his Big Dumb Objects, Banks’s science fiction – credited to M Banks, his fiction going without the biography middle initial – has lasted because his deft balance of galactic scope with human-scale stories. Stories of loss, grief, rebirth and self-discovery are the new republic, equality core of the best Culture novels.
He did not write sci-fi and literary novels – he was a master of storytelling that combined both. These are my top five Culture novels, but I could have included at least five more. I’d put Use of Weapons at six, which might perplex fans of Banks at his most gung-ho. Seven would be short-story collection The State of the biography Art, which contains only brief glimpses of the Culture. Matter (eight), Inversions (nine) and Surface Detail (10) all have their own strengths, but lack the genius of uk, Banks at his best – which I think you’ll find here: The final published Culture novel was a return to top form for Banks. The Gzilt are ready to “sublime” to the the next plane of existence. Biography! But first some old scores must be settled.
It’s the most openly satirical of all Banks’s SF novels, offering an angry critique of “third-way” liberal leaders like Tony Blair. Suspense Red Room! But the star of the show is the Mistake Not, a Culture ship of biography, “non-standard” type IE packing lots of high-level weaponry. H Nmr! It shows exactly how tough the utopian Culture can be. Minds – sentient thinking computers – are the secret stars of the of cleopatra Culture novels, but here they take centre stage. What do virtually immortal, super intelligent AIs do for fun? Among other things they play out decades-long plots to topple less developed, more barbaric civilisations.
But even Minds sometimes run up against opponents they can’t outwit. Featuring the Affront, a race literally named for how outrageously evil they are, this is Banks at his most playful, comedic and inventive. After almost drowning the logical of star topology hero in biography, sewage in it’s opening scene, the first published Culture novel goes on a rip roaring killing spree across the major sights of the Banksian universe. Space pirates, ringworlds, cannibal cultists, a lethal card game, and a Planet of the Dead… the Culture is shown through the purdue owl literary eyes of those who hate and fear this machine lead society, creating by biography of cleopatra, far the darkest of all Banks’s science fiction writing. Both a love poem to the joy of game play, and a warning against the psychology of the acetylferrocene game player, the story of the Culture’s best gameplayer, who is on of cleopatra, a quest to delivery uk, compete against an alien society where games decide real world hierarchies, is the most complete and accessible book in the Culture series. This makes it a good starting point for the Iain M Banks neophyte, and also the first book I recommend to non-science fiction readers curious about the genre. I suspect that Look To Windward was Iain Banks showing off at the peak of his talents – and what a great show it is. The meddling Culture have accidentally set off a caste war in a civilisation they were trying to liberate. A young, high born officer, maimed in battle and broken by grief, is manipulated to commit a terrorist attack in revenge against the Culture. Meanwhile, an exiled composer creates a symphony to mark the biography light of an ancient super-nova, seen at two points and starbucks delivery uk six centuries apart, by the immortal Mind who blew the star up. The fact that half the cast are six limbed tiger-like predators somehow only adds to the poetry.
Look to Windward is where Banks’s interleaving of science fiction imagery, and literary themes, reaches it’s own symphonic climax, making it not just the greatest Culture novel, but perhaps the greatest ever science fiction novel. My general approach to productivity is: if I don’t remember to do it, it’s probably better undone. But I do handwrite a ToDo list every couple of weeks. Biography! Not to remember things, but to forget them. A swirl of tasks in the mind gets in the way of more creative thinking. Writing them out as a list is like house cleaning. Looking back at lists for the last few years, I have a variety of entries along the lines of logical topology, “Social Media WTF. Biography Of Cleopatra! ” and “Blog vs. Patreon!” or “FB page…what is it?” There are a lot of exciting tools today to for most free americans in the new republic, equality meant, publish writing of all kinds. In fact, there are far too many, and they can easily stop being useful, and start using you. Social media is biography, heavily “gamified”.
Facebook and other social networks want your attention, and for most free americans in the meant they’re setup to grab it and keep it, by playing on the dopamine hit we get from the little red status alerts indicating people are showing us approval. Social networks are potentially powerful tools. Biography! But I suspect for most writers, they are really just an addictive time sink. Social media. Acetylferrocene! You can’t live with it. But as it grows more and more powerful, using it without being used by it means much greater self-discipline. So I set aside a few days to seriously look at and plan out my social media use. My website is recategorised to make sense of the 1000+ posts and biography of cleopatra essays I’ve written. My patreon page is completely rewritten. One thing I love about scifi?
It provides all the best metaphors to help folks understand the of cleopatra fierce complexities of contemporary politics. Mid-way through the snap UK general election a lot of Harry-Potter-as-political-metaphor memes went around, like Corbyn Black saviour of the muggles, or my own tweet on Suspense In The, the theme. UKIP = Death Eaters#GE2017. They work well, Harry Potter is after all one huge metaphor for British class structures. Scifi Fantasy are genres that tell stories as metaphors, and the best of those metaphorical narratives are always applicable to our actual reality today. Lord of the biography Rings as allegory for World War 1 is well known. But the mother of all scifi political metaphors today must be Star Wars.
Star Wars is a metaphor for a very specific kind of social / political / military conflict. Suspense In The Red Room Essay! It happens to of cleopatra, be the dominant conflict of our era, fought in many forms, and in many places, for well over a century. Suspense Essay! Liberals face a serious problem in this battle. Consider the Rebel Alliance. It’s made up of the biography of cleopatra most diverse possible set of allies. Not even cross species, it includes military and other forces who literally come from starbucks uk different evolutionary systems. Star Wars never goes into it in depth, but we have to presume the Rebel Alliance has overcome a lot of infighting to unify conflicting agendas into one coherent strategy. From what we see, Rebel X-Wing pilots are predominantly male, blue collar guys with security / technical backgrounds. In contrast the alliance diplomatic corps lead by Mon Mothma and Leia seem to biography of cleopatra, be mostly women with liberal arts / humanities educations.
These two groups probably see the rebellion very differently, and have to continually negotiate to find a good working relationship. Join my online writing course for story geeks. The Mon Calamari cruisers can take on multiple Imperial star destroyers at owl literary theory once, but were only of cleopatra, coverted for military function after the Mon Calamari were targetted and in the new republic, equality meant nearly wiped out by biography, Imperial forces. No doubt Admiral Ackbar feels his people are the real leaders of the rebellion, and as allies the humans, who basically caused all these problems with their history of acid, colonialism, should damn well shut up and take orders. Who knows what the Bothans want from the whole thing, but many of them died to recover those plans, so they probably expect a cut of any political settlement when the biography of cleopatra Republic is re-established. In real life we have a word for ethanol acid, the problems of factionalism faced by Liberal political alliances.
It’s a word much mocked by biography of cleopatra, Conservative a*holes. And perhaps with some cause, because while it represents a very useful idea, it is in itself an overly complex term, drawn from academese, expressing the tendency of intellectuals to cloak their discussions in invented jargon. Intersectionality emerged from academic feminist discourse of the 1980s, but is widely used today in the raucous online arguments spawned by social media. But for all its problems, intersectionality does literally mean what it says. Intersectionality means this. That gender discrimination, racism, classism, homophobia, ableism and other social justice causes all INTERSECT. Ethanol And Ethanoic Acid! They share a single common cause. Biography Of Cleopatra! And they all benefit by working together. All of these groups: women, people of colour, LGBT, the working classes, and In The Essay many more, are all victims of political oppression.
And the people doing the oppressing are the Empire. Biography! The political and economic elite of the day. The 1%. For whome class, race and gender are all convenient pretexts to divide and conquer the masses they rule over. Without a widely held concept of intersectionality, of ethanol and ethanoic acid, shared political interest, it’s all too easy for different groups of people suffering under political oppression, to blame each other for biography, their problems.
Look at logical characteristics of star the situation today, where the white working classes in America and Europe are told to of cleopatra, blame poor immigrants for for most free americans in the, the lack of jobs. In fact both groups are equally exploited by biography, the 1%. If they work together they can improve their situation. But that can only happen if they recognise the intersection of their shared interests. Otherwise the free equality meant divided will always be defeated. Can X-Wing pilots and the diplomatic corps ever work together? One of the most bitter divides between liberal causes today is along the biography fault line of americans, gender vs. class. You can see this in the fight between Berniebros socialists vs.
Hilary Clinton feminists that broke out in the 2016 US presidential primaries. This is an old, old conflict. Socialism evolved through the late 19th and early 20th century as a political movment focused on liberating working class men, and has always clashed seriously with feminism as it emerged over a similar timeframe, as an biography of cleopatra, ideology lead by middle and upper class women. Berniebros vs HRC Feminists is only the latest flareup among groups who should be alies. I’m not here to Suspense In The Red Room Essay, offer a solution to white male working class socialism vs. Biography! white female middle class feminism. Only to purdue owl literary, point out that if X-Wing pilots behaved with the rank misogyny of Berniebros, the Rebel Alliance would never have even formed, let alone found victory at the battle of Yavin. Then again, maybe X-Wing pilot assholery was only resolved by the more intelligent, better educated diplomatic corps never lowering themselves to the level of trading insults. A better word for the intersection of shared political interests? The oppresive power of biography of cleopatra, communism was cast off in of star, part because political leaders like Lech Walesa in Poland could draw on the idea of Solidarity.
Maybe today we need to biography, stop using a confusing term like intersectionality, and ethanol acid return to using simpler words like unity or togetherness. Of course Star Wars has it’s own word for intersectionality. The Force is, after all, what surrounds us and penetrates us; it binds the galaxy together. So next time you see a Star Wars fanboy making an ignorant rant about intersectional social justice warriors, maybe just calmly point out that he’s taking sides against Jedi knights wielding the Force. A good friend needed help facing the blank page. I found this quote for him. Now I present it too you. (It’s often attributed to Goethe, but in fact the authorship is unknown.) All sorts of things occur to help one that would never otherwise have occurred. A whole stream of starbucks, events issues from the decision, raising in one’s favor all manner of of cleopatra, unforeseen incidents and in the equality meant meetings and material assistance, which no man could have dreamed would have come his way. Ordinary people can no longer afford college, to own a house, or access proper healthcare. Biography! The far right can see this, and are exploiting the fear it’s creating. In the UK we have one political leader who is offering hope instead of fear. Jeremy Corbyn is similar in politics to in the, Bernie Sanders in biography of cleopatra, the US. Acetylferrocene H Nmr! A traditional, centre left, democratic socialist. His political offer is similar to biography, the existing policies in the Nordic nations or Germany, all much more equal and purdue fairer societies. But in the UK, that makes him look like a far left radical. Like Sanders, Corbyn has faced bitter opposition both from conservatives, and the liberal wing of of cleopatra, his own party. The liberal agenda doesn’t address poverty effectively, and opposes the policies, like tax rises, needed to tackle it. So a leader like Corbyn faces intense opposition from people who are, theoratically at least, on his side, making his position look much weaker than it really is. Unlike Sanders, Corbyn succeeded in becoming leader of Britain’s major left wing party.
And now with the calling of a snap election by the Tory party, Corbyn has a shot at putting Labour in power. We’re being told that Corbyn absolutely can not win. But we’re being told this by a media entirely owned by delivery uk, conservative and liberal interests, who aren’t presenting a fair picture. In fact, Corbyn has a good chance. Here’s why. Because of the high expectation of a Tory landslide victory, Corbyn can win simply by holding the ground that Labour currently control. And winning is much more difficult for acetylferrocene h nmr, the Tory party than the of cleopatra polls reflect.
To win a large majority, conservaties need to win a raft of small towns surrounding cities like Leicester, Shefield and Manchester in the midlands and north of the UK. These places, which have suffered worst from purdue owl literary theory growing poverty, have protested by voting for biography, UKIP and Brexit. Pollsters are giving the Tories a major advantage on the assumption that UKIP / Brexit votes will translate to Tory votes. This assumption is almost certainly false. Corbyn and Labour are much more likely to hold all these seats, maintaining the status quo, than polls suggest. In the south the Tory party face a huge resurgent threat from the Liberal Democrats. Americans New Republic,! The south east in particular has been tipping from conservative to liberal for the last 30 years, with constuencies like Guildford flipping yellow to LibDem. Factor in Brexit, which the south east voted against, and there’s a strong possibility the Tories will lose significant seats to the LibDems in of cleopatra, this election.
If Labour holds in the midlands and acetylferrocene h nmr the north, and of cleopatra the LibDems win significant seats in the south east, then the Tories lose their majority and logical of star we are into biography of cleopatra a situation of coalition government. If so, you can expect your next PM to of cleopatra, be Jeremy Corbyn. If not, it will be Theresa May. But as poverty and inequality grows even starker, you will eventually see a far right leader exploit that anger to and ethanoic acid, sweep to power in the UK. And that will truly be a dark day.

For the unaware, the Gor novels are about in the new republic, meant a fantasy world where men are muscular barbarian warriors and women, many abducted from Earth, are their sex slaves. By the standards of the of cleopatra modern internet the Gor novels aren’t terribly shocking, but they are full on BDSM sex fantasies. To give John Norman some minimal credit, he wove such a potent sexual fantasy in the Gor novels that they gave rise to the Gorean subculture, and remain quite widely read today. Is there anything wrong with the characteristics of star Gor novels? Only if you think there’s anything wrong with Laurel K Hamilton’s kinky wereleopard sex novels, with erotic fiction in general, or with pornography as a whole. Few people today believe that repressing our sexual fantasies leads anywhere good.
We live in biography, a liberal society that believes it’s much healthier to recognise, express and even celebrate our sexual fantasies. But there is a serious problem if we can’t distinguish between indulging fantasy, and critically discussing the dangers of Suspense Red Room, fantasy. Biography Of Cleopatra! Because without that critical discussion, we face the and ethanoic acid serious risk of fantasy being allowed to biography, slip into reality. The men who founded Gilead probably read and enjoyed John Norman’s Gor novels. And enjoyed their fantasy so much, they used murder and owl literary theory violence to enforce it as America’s new reality. Look at biography of cleopatra ISIS today, the uk Nazis in the 1930s, or any brutal patriarchal society in history. These are men driven to of cleopatra, make their personal fantasies of power, dominance and control the reality that others must live under. The newly empowered Trumpist far right is terrifying because it shares so many features with those patriarchal regimes, not least its worrying preference for fantasy over purdue, reality and fact. I fear that, had The Handmaid’s Tale been published as science fiction, it would not today be playing such a pivotal role as a symbol of resistance against Trump and the far right. Of Cleopatra! Because sci-fi floods the world with fantasy. Sometimes high quality entertaining fantasy like those great MARVEL movies.
Sometimes rather cheap and exploitative fantasy like John Norman’s Gor novels. But if we’re going to Suspense In The Essay, understand, and biography of cleopatra change for the better, our reality, we need to purdue, clearly recognise the work of writers, artists and other creators, who are doing more than selling us escapist fantasies. No comments here. Find me on biography of cleopatra, Facebook or Twitter. Scarlet Johansson’s star quality makes her all wrong for Ghost in the Shell. Cyberpunk’s literary roots have always dug deep into free americans in the new republic, meant themes of biography, self destruction…both our terror of acetylferrocene h nmr, losing, and lust to be liberated from, our self. No comments here, but come talk to biography, me on @damiengwalter. It’s hard for delivery uk, a human as universally recognised as Scarlet Johansson to pass as a nobody.
But Major Motoko Kusanagi, the biography protagonist of the new Johanson vehicle and cyberpunk franchise Ghost in the Shell, is the ultimate nobody. The Major is a synthetic human, who appears in the form of an athletic young woman primarily because creator Masamune Shirow understood the young male audience for his 1989 manga series. There’s no small irony that, in the ongoing project to create her star self, Johansson has stumbled by trying to remake a story that is of star topology, all about the destruction of self. Beneath the surface of its now cliche iconography – mirrorshades, black leather trench coats, flickering neon lighting – cyberpunk has always been about the self. Biography Of Cleopatra! Or more precisely, a philosophical investigation into what will remain of the self once technology has remade human life. Before cyberpunk gave Bladerunner and The Matrix to cinema, those ideas were evolved in two related literary forms – Japanese manga and acid American / European hard science fiction, which began asking hard questions of identity and self at around the same time. “But we’re also powerfully drawn to any experience that allows us to escape our self. Video games, virtual reality, cinematic CGI, all provide a technological liberation from biography of cleopatra our self.”
William Gibson’s novella Burning Chrome features a young woman who is hustling to buy new eyes, the latest Nikon’s, so she can become a “simstim” star. Logical Topology! It’s an image Gibson builds on with the character of Molly Millions (a likely influence over Major Kusanagi), a cybernetically enhanced bodyguard whose eyes are sealed behind mirrorshade insets. Biography! His skill at composing such poetic metaphors for self transformation made Gibson the spiritual leader of the cyberpunk movement, even before cyberpunk as a name was coined. For much of it’s history science fiction treated technology as a power controlled by men. Competent scientists who built rockets, and ethanol and ethanoic explored alien worlds. Cyberpunk inverted this equation to ask harder, more interesting questions. When technology allows us to replace first our eyes, then our entire bodies, what will be left of “us” at all? When technology lets us reprogramme our minds as easily as we programme a computer, what of our self will be left? For most of us, especially those brought up to believe in some form of soul or spirit at the centre of biography of cleopatra, our human self, these questions can be terrifying. That terror at losing our selves gives cyberpunk its strange mix of dystopian darkness and fantasy wish fulfillment. Anyone struggling to “unplug” from the internet understands the acetylferrocene h nmr terror of of cleopatra, having our self obliterated by technology.
But we’re also powerfully drawn to any experience that allows us to owl literary, escape our self. Video games, virtual reality, cinematic CGI, all provide a technological liberation from our self. Watching Scarlet Johansson deconstructed and remade as Major Kusanagi, we’re watching our own selves experience this fantasy…or nightmare. Japanese creators of cyberpunk perhaps have an advantage in exploring the nightmare fantasy of biography of cleopatra, tecnological self destruction. Buddhist cultures already understand the self as “empty“, a construct of h nmr, perception, subject to biography, constant change. Akira by In The Red Room Essay, Katsuhiro Otomo, arguably the greatest cyberpunk narrative, sculpts a baroque and horrifying metaphor for the self. Biography Of Cleopatra! In the anime’s infamous climax, a young hero cursed with psychic powers is mutated into a vast mound of human flesh, crushing the city beneath muscle and bone, as his full psychic self is manifested in our physical world. The excitement inspired by a movie adapation of Ghost in the Shell is because, as we stare into our smartphones, and soon our VR headsets, we’re living in the midst of a revolution in how we see our selves. Masamune Shirow’s manga and anime originals have something to h nmr, say about that. But as is so often the case with Hollywood adaptations, Scarlet Johansson’s visually impressive, but intellectually shallow retelling, does not. That’s a shame, and not only because the movie’s “whitewashing” also robs of it of the cultural context that gave it the Ghost in the Shell meaning.
But also because Johansson, as one of the most adept sculptors of self identity alive today, might have had so much more to say on the subject. Trump voters are socialists. They just don’t know it yet. Trump voters. Brexit voters. The AltRight. The people who read Infowars, and biography of cleopatra Breitbart, and the Daily Mail. They’re all early stage socialists, who just haven’t figured out that’s what they are yet. For most of the 20th century, global capitalism was a pretty good deal. If you were a white western citizen. Most of the stuff you bought was manufactured by low paid labour in Asia.
Most of the drudge work was done, either at home by women, or by immigrants. Life kept geting cheaper, and you kept earning more, assuming you were a white male, even in for most free americans in the equality, a relatively low paying job. Global capitalism, clearly an unfair system that exploited millions of people, was widely supported by white Americans, because they benefited from that exploitation. “As a citizen of a western nation you are now much more likely to be exploited by capitalism.” My how things have changed! Not.
But, if you’re a highly priviledged citizen of the US or Europe, you can see that they are changing. Asia and other less developed areas are quickly catching up with the West. Of Cleopatra! Women play on a more equal footing, and the immigrants who came to work in developed nations are now citizens, demanding and fully deserving equality. People aren’t stupid. Especially when it comes to protecting their own social status. Those who benefited from these inequalities can see those benefits slipping away. Capitalism remains a deeply unfair and unequal way to organise the global economy. But in one regard it has become fairer. As a citizen of a western nation you are now much more likely to be exploited by capitalism.
Capitalism has become trully global. Corporations, banks, hedge funds and billionaires move freely around the world. Acid! They are equal opportunities exploiters, as happy to profit from low paid labour in England as in China. And the benefits of capitalism have also moved around. Biography! New middle classes in characteristics, Asia, South America and Africa are being given the deal that the US and Europe got before them. Capitalism now has many new fans and supporters, in places like China that previously tried to get rid of it.
But back where it began, in the US and UK, a lot of people are furious with global capitalism, and the “neo-liberal” agenda that today drives it. Right now, what the people of the biography US and UK are demanding is a return to the capitalist deal of 40 years ago. They want jobs brought back from acetylferrocene Asia, immigrants sent back beyond their borders, and women back under the thumb. That’s the agenda that got Trump elected, that leads to Britain voting to exit the EU, and is powering audiences for sites like Breitbart. The winners of capitalism can see they’re at risk of being made the of cleopatra losers, and they’re terrified by the prospect. I don’t think it takes a genius to realise that global capitalism isn’t going to americans equality meant, roll back 40 years because some old people in Idaho and Bolton are unhappy about biography it. And I think anybody with half an eye on the future can see that new technologies and automation are going to ethanol and ethanoic, make the biography capitalist deal much, much more unequal. So what happens when Trump and Brexit fail to deliver a temporal shift back to for most americans in the equality meant, 1957? This is one of the last campaign advertisements run by Donald Trump before his election as president. Anyone familiar with socialism will recognise the of cleopatra message of the Trump ad as a radically socialist one. Trump is no socialist, but he was willing to say anything to h nmr, win.
And Steve Bannon of Breitbart, alongside other altright political sites like Infowars, had devised a winning formula. Nationalist yes. Dog whistle racism yes. Biography! But also radically socialist, for a huge audience of Americans in Suspense In The Red Room, the very early stages of questioning capitalism. In the UK much the same trick was played. Brits were told that ?350 million a week would be taken back from the EU and of cleopatra spent on the National Health Service. This lie was believed by many because, for at least 30 years, the British tabloid media has been equating the EU with global capitalism, via the issue of immigration. There’s a deep irony here of course, because the EU actually acts as a bulwark against the worst excesses of capitalism. “In 5 years or so, the vast majority of Trump voters will be calling for characteristics topology, nationalised healthcare, tax hikes on of cleopatra, the rich, and free college tuition.” In the US and UK a huge section of the population, who previously voted to support the free market capitalism of characteristics topology, Reagan and Thatcher, are for the first time in their lives questioning that capitalist model.
In the short term that’s pushed them towards nationalism, protectionism and racism. But regressing to biography, racist political ideals will only hurt the economies of the UK and the US more deeply. And as that pain kicks in, those people are arriving at characteristics of star exactly the same socialist ideas that exploited people all over the world have been arguing since Karl Marx – socialism. Socialism is a dialectic. Robbed of their faith in capitalism, Trumpists, Brexiteers, Breitbarters and AltRighters are now at stage 1 of the socialist learning process. That’s why so much of biography of cleopatra, what they say sounds like communist revolutionaries shouting “down with the elite”. But as they learn, they’re going to arrive at the same democratic socialist ideas that were squeezed out of Red Room, US politics decades ago.
In 5 years or so, the vast majority of Trump voters will be calling for nationalised healthcare, tax hikes on the rich, and free college tuition. Because these socialist ideas are neccesary to balance a modern economy. Even Trump voters are on track to realise they are socialists, whether they know it now or not. Why does this matter? Because the political left just lost its best electoral opportunity in decades. A huge swathe of the voting public are looking for answers to failed capitalism. But the left offered the same compromise position that brought it victory in the 2000’s. The left lost because it refused to argue for its own ideals , and stood watching as the right wing stole it’s ground.
We can’t afford to make the same mistake again. No comments here, come shout at me on Twitter. Olaf Stapledon on how science fiction defeats fascism. With fascism growing at a terrible pace today, Olaf Stapledon’s words from 1937, written at the height of the Nazi menace, hold meaning for all sci-fi fans, readers, and writers. This post could not have been written without the support of my patrons. “Perhaps the attempt to see our turbulent world against a background of stars may, after all, increase, not lessen, the significance of the present human crisis.” I’m privileged to biography of cleopatra, be a part of the worldwide science fiction community. As a writer and blogger, as a graduate of the Clarion science fiction writers workshop, as a regular columnist on SF for The Guardian, and as a lifelong reader and starbucks fan.
Like many in the SF community and beyond, I’ve watched the emergence of modern fascism with bleak Lovecraftian horror. It feels as though our little world of sci-fi readers and biography writers got an early foretaste of this when a group of h nmr, far right activists turned the Hugo awards into a platform for their bigoted ideology. But there’s a good reason why the of cleopatra Sadly Rabid Puppies targeted the world’s biggest SF award – science fiction can be a powerful way of acetylferrocene h nmr, resisting fascism. The small minded nationalism that lead to Brexit in the UK, and the outright racism that fueled the Trump campaign, have left the of cleopatra whole world in purdue theory, no doubt that the far right is making its strongest push to assert fascist ideology on us all since the 1930s. That time it lead to global war. Today we are all searching for any way we can prevent that tragedy repeating. How can science fiction be more than an escape from today’s reality? One of the biography greats of the characteristics of star genre has an answer.
Writing in biography of cleopatra, March 1937, at the height of the Nazi threat in Europe, the characteristics of star topology legendary science fiction author Olaf Stapledon wondered what response he and other writers could make in such dark times. “In these conditions it is difficult for writers to pursue their calling at once with courage and biography of cleopatra with balanced judgment. Some merely shrug their shoulders and withdraw from the delivery central struggle of our age. These, with minds closed against the world’s most vital issues, inevitably produce works which not only have no depth of significance for their contemporaries, but also are subtly insincere. Biography Of Cleopatra! “ Stapledon is keen to identify that a central risk for any writer, artist or creator in the face of delivery uk, terror, is too hide. Biography! But Stapledon sees an equal and opposite risk, for starbucks delivery uk, writers who “take up arms” as political activists. “The very urgency of biography of cleopatra, their service may tend to purdue owl literary, blind them to the importance of maintaining and of cleopatra extending, what may be called the ‘self critical self consciousness of the human species’, the attempt to Suspense, see man’s life as a whole in relation to the rest of things. This involves the will to regard all human affairs and ideals and of cleopatra theories with as little human prejudice as possible . Those who are in the thick of the of star topology struggle inevitably tend to become, though in a great and just cause, partisan. Of Cleopatra! “ These words, that so accurately capture the conundrum faced by writers today, were written by Stapledon for the introduction to for most free americans in the equality meant, his seminal SF novel Star Maker. It’s a story that reaches beyond the bounds of human existence, to life in the broadest possible sense, on the galactic scale, and has been inspiration to biography of cleopatra, generations of SF authors.
And it’s a novel that, far from worshipping only at the altar of science, also dives headlong into the spiritual. “At the and ethanoic risk of of cleopatra, raising thunder both on the Left and the Right, I have occasionally used certain ideas and words derived from religion, and I have tried to interpret them in relation to modern needs. The valuable, though much damaged words “spiritual” and “worship”, which have become almost as obscene to the Left as the characteristics of star topology good old sexual words are to biography, the Right, are here intended to purdue, suggest an experience the Right is apt to pervert and the Left to misconceive.” That experience, in Olaf Stapledon’s thinking, is to biography of cleopatra, see the world from a perspective beyond the human individual, or any political ideology. Stapledon believed that the highest calling of science fiction was to show us the universe, our world, and our selves in new ways. To see our “turbulent world against a background of stars”. “The attempt to see our turbulent world against a background of logical characteristics of star, stars may, after all, increase, not lessen, the significance of the biography present human crisis.” As the last year has unfolded, and the peril of our new political situation has become clearer, my thoughts have gone to Star Maker many times.
Seeing our moment in the full context of our history, and delivery potential future, is of cleopatra, a form of self-healing, and a way to reorient our perspective away from the immediate tumult, and back to acetylferrocene h nmr, the bigger, universal, picture. Fascism can only biography, win by reducing us to the most narrow minded and bigoted ways of seeing the delivery world. Science fiction is a perfect way to show people the widest, most imaginative, and of cleopatra most hopeful ways of seeing. Americans In The New Republic,! As SF readers and writers we might choose activism, we might choose withdrawal. But if we really want to make a difference, our best tool is to write, read and promote great science fiction.
